  • How the hell do I have jury duty AGAIN?

The city claims it's no more than annual but it's only been 8 months and they've called my name again for my annual jury summons. Obviously, I'm in Virginia so I can't do jury duty in Philadelphia but what the hell?

    I'd contact them, not us.

Jury Service in the Philadelphia Court is one of the highest duties of citizenship and it is an essential element of our democratic society. Citizens selected as jurors participate in a decision-making process in order to reach a verdict or decision of guilt or innocence in both civil and criminal cases. Service as a juror provides an interesting opportunity for citizens to learn more about our system of justice and how it works. Nearly 100,000 citizens are called to duty in Philadelphia each year.

8 months ago it was 2012, and now it's 2013.

        From the FAQ http://www.courts.phila.gov/juryservice/

If a person serves for one or two days, they need not serve again for a period of one year. If service is for three or more days, the exemption period is three years.

It's probably the same as it is here. It's because the random picking thing doesn't know you've done it before.

If it is like here you just contact them and they exempt you. And it tells you all that on the documentation they send you.

Yes, contact them and let them know. If you're lucky they'll screw it up and put a do not select indicator on your name without a expiration date on it. I assume that happened to me since I used to get called ever year or two like clockwork until they did it twice in one year. I called them, and I haven't been called since (knock on wood) It's been over 5 years.

This is what you get for living in a city with a ridiculous crime rate.

And yet I've never been called for jury duty, despite being registered to vote and whatnot.

Al, I'd assume the 'need not serve' means 'you can get out of it', but their selection algorithms probably aren't all that good.
