    Loss of Hearing

Around 1801, Beethoven began to lose his hearing. He suffered a severe form of tinnitus, a "roar" in his ears that made it hard for him to appreciate music and he would avoid conversation. The cause of Beethoven's deafness is unknown, but it has variously been attributed to syphilis, lead poisoning, typhus, or possibly even his habit of immersing his head in cold water to stay awake. Over time, his hearing loss became acute: there is a well-attested story that, at the premiere of his Ninth Symphony, he had to be turned round to see the tumultuous applause of the audience, hearing nothing. In 1802, he became depressed, and considered committing suicide. He left Vienna for a time for small Austrian town of Heiligenstadt, where he wrote the "Heiligenstadt Testament", in which he resolved to continue living through his art. He continued composing even as his hearing deteriorated. After a failed attempt in 1811 to perform his own "Emperor" Concerto, he never performed in public again.

As a result of Beethoven's hearing loss, a unique historical record has been preserved: he kept conversation books discussing music and other issues, and giving an insight into his thought. Even today, the conversation books form the basis for investigation into how he felt his music should be performed, and his relationship to art - which he took very seriously.

He works as a teacher, I doubt he has anything worse than small hearing loss.

Well, he's a Roman Catholic convert and lives in Texas and is an apologist for apartheid. So I'm figuring some kind of progressive dementia, multiple personality disorder, deep-seated psychosis...

I don't see why even complete deafness (not sure what the term is, since "full hearing loss" doesn't actually mean you cannot hear at all, just are at a certain threshold by federal or state guidelines) should prevent you from being a teacher. Especially in the modern age of computers and such. Students would probably be happy to tweet their discussions

Right, let's buy an electronic device for every student who doesn't have a twitter-suitable device and then hope they'll pay attention to the teacher who is attempting to teach by tweets instead of using the device to play games. This sounds like a recipe for success.

Deaf doesn't mean mute. There are lots of ways you could accommodate with minimal effort.

I should probably be at the top of your cereal killer list. Or my son; RB can polish off a bowl of Wheaties in record time for a not-quite-2 year old.

                            Cereal killers are overrated.

Beethoven provides small comfort for a child who is deaf. He was already 30 when his hearing began to go. He was already a successful composer by then.

Evelyn Glennie - can't say I heard about her. Lou Ferrigno? Yeah, sure. He played the Hulk. Not much of a model for me. I was taught about Lou but I never thought - wow, the man was the Hulk clearly deaf people can act as the Hulk opens up doors for me.

Thomas Edison? I was never taught that he was deaf. Which is a shame. He's *exactly* someone who would have been helpful for me. Like I said, I can only go on what I was taught, not on what necessarily exists. This is before the internet...
