Open carry scares people unnecessarily. Concealed carry also adds ambiguity as to who is armed, so not everyone needs to be armed for there to be a deterrent.

The question is could he have stopped the other guy without the use of a gun? The answer is - yes, given that he is a marine, so is hopefully better prepared than the usual Joe and in the meantine he could have used that other miracolous device - phone, and hope your well funded police force arrives to help the lady.

What about a sabre, I would support bringing sabers back in, carry that, and you even have to practice a bit to get to use it well. All the duels - would be safer and people using them to protect could feel even better about themselves.

The difference is that someone sees the business end of a pistol and that big hole pointing at them, they usually pay enough attention that you don't have to use it. Shotguns work much better for deterrent value, because someone sees a much bigger hole pointed at them and realizes that a lost of nasty little objects can come out of that hole and ruin their day.

If you're not obviously armed with a standoff weapon, then the ******* is much less likely to take you seriously, and much more likely to want to have a word with you for interfering with his "fun." A cowboy idiot with a gun is one thing, but an intelligent citizen who knows his legal limits is more likely to be able to prevent a lethal escalation.

It's more than that. Open carry makes you a target because the gun is a really valuable piece of property. Cops get their guns stolen all the time.

What does this have to do with concealed carry permits? If you're gonna shoot one carrying a concealed weapon without a permit is a pretty minor charge to have tacked on. It's usually just a misdemeanor. Getting rid of CCW permits wouldn't reduce the murders at all; we know this because CCW permits are a relatively recent phenomenon; they were practically nonexistent 20 years ago.
