Marine with concealed carry permit stops man from beating woman

WEST ALLIS (WITI) — A Marine Corps veteran was able to stop a man early Tuesday, March 12th from nearly kicking a woman to death. It happened near 102nd and Lincoln, and Wisconsin’s concealed carry law made his efforts possible.

Charlie Blackmore was driving home from work at 4:00 a.m. along Lincoln Avenue when he saw something on the sidewalk. Blackmore didn’t realize it was a woman on the ground being kicked in the head and stomach until he got closer.

That’s when he jumped out of his car and sprung into action.

“I said ‘stop’ and he starts coming towards me and that`s when I drew on him. He started getting closer and I said ‘get down on the ground,’” Blackmore said.

Blackmore held his gun on the suspect and called West Allis police. He says several times while waiting for police to arrive, the attacker moved toward him.

“I mean I’ve already made it up in mind that if he came at me I was going to have to take him down and I told him that. I warned him multiple times not to come towards me because he was a big guy and I wasn’t playing around and he didn’t seem like he was playing around,” Blackmore said.

Blackmore says police eventually showed up and had to force the suspect to the ground. They then asked to see Blackmore’s concealed carry permit.

“I put my hands up turned around and said ‘you can grab it out of my wallet.’ Checked my permit, gave me my wallet back, and then interviewed me for their paperwork,” Blackmore said.

West Allis police say that paperwork is not yet available. For that reason, the name of the attacker and his victim have not yet been released.

“She had a really big laceration by her eye and it looked like her nose was broken,” Blackmore said.

Blackmore didn’t catch any names either, but said the victim told him the man is an ex-boyfriend.

“She was not with him anymore and he had stalked her that day or something and he attacked her on her way to work,” Blackmore said.

Blackmore says situations like this are why he supports Wisconsin’s concealed carry law, and the rights of gun owners.

“We do good things. Not all of us are bad or crazy gun nuts. There are good people,” Blackmore said.

The West Allis police chief says these types of situations really are judgement calls for gun owners. While they don’t encourage this behavior, they appreciate citizens watching out for each other as long as they do it legally and are willing to accept the consequences.

The question is could he have stopped the other guy without the use of a gun? The answer is - yes, given that he is a marine, so is hopefully better prepared than the usual Joe and in the meantine he could have used that other miracolous device - phone, and hope your well funded police force arrives to help the lady.

What about a sabre, I would support bringing sabers back in, carry that, and you even have to practice a bit to get to use it well. All the duels - would be safer and people using them to protect could feel even better about themselves.

Except that there's always been a problem with 911, as the mayor of Milwaukee found out a few years ago:

Peters charged with beating Milwaukee mayor
By Sharif Durhams of the Journal Sentinel
            Aug. 20, 2009

Hours after his arrest Sunday, Anthony J. Peters told police that he started yelling at a man he later learned was Milwaukee's mayor, demanding to know why he was calling 911 about a confrontation Peters was having with the grandmother of his child.

Peters then "freaked out" on Tom Barrett, punching him in the face and hitting him with a tire iron he had tucked under his shirt, he told two Milwaukee detectives.

He said he hit the mayor while he was standing and kept swinging after Barrett had fallen to the ground.

Those statements contained in a criminal complaint released Thursday provide the first explanation from Peters' perspective of a confrontation that left Barrett beaten and bleeding Saturday as he and his family members were leaving State Fair Park in West Allis.

Barrett was hospitalized after his right hand was shattered and three teeth were knocked out or broken in the beating. Barrett did punch Peters in the face during the fight, the complaint said.

Peters, 20, made his first court appearance in the case Thursday to face a felony charge of first-degree reckless injury, use of a dangerous weapon.

Peters also was charged with disorderly conduct and bail jumping, both misdemeanors, and theft, a felony.

The disorderly conduct charge stems from Peters' argument with his child's grandmother. The theft charge was filed because prosecutors said Peters took and destroyed Barrett's cell phone.

Peters pleaded not guilty to the misdemeanors, court records show. His bail was set at $100,000. He is being held in the Milwaukee County Jail.

Peters also was ordered to have no contact with his ex-girlfriend, his ex-girlfriend's mother and any member of Barrett's family.

If convicted of all charges, Peters faces more than 40 years in prison.

District Attorney John Chisholm said the case had received high-level attention and resources, not because it involved Barrett, but because of what Barrett did.

"We gave this the same attention we would give any case where a citizen inserted themselves into a dangerous situation to try to help another citizen. That is what the mayor did," Chisholm said.

Peters' mother and brother attended the hearing, but both declined to be interviewed by a reporter.

The mayor, who was released from the hospital Monday, checked out the charges Thursday and is satisfied with the steps taken by prosecutors, said Patrick Curley, Barrett's chief of staff.

Barrett had doctor appointments scheduled for Thursday and Friday and might schedule additional surgeries based on advice from those doctors, Curley said.

Barrett and his staff also are evaluating how much time the mayor will spend in the office and how much work he will do from home while trying to recuperate, the chief of staff said.

The complaint provides more detail from the mayor, who told investigators he saw an object under Peters' shirt that looked like a gun and that he feared for his life.

The complaint also clarifies the type of weapon used in the beating.

Police initially described the weapon as a pipe, and Barrett's brother said he believed it was an extendable police-style baton. In the complaint, an officer says a search of a nearby Dumpster recovered an 18-inch tire iron bearing a Chrysler logo. The tire iron had blood on it.

Peters told investigators he was carrying the tire iron so he could break the windows of his child's grandmother's car, the complaint says. Peters told police that he had been drinking that evening, and that he wanted to see his daughter.
            Conflict began earlier

The conflict over Peters' daughter started earlier in the evening, when Peters called his daughter's grandmother's house.

            According to the complaint:

The grandmother of Peter's daughter said Peters told her over the phone that he was coming to her house in the 8700 block of W. Orchard St. in West Allis. The woman put Peters' daughter in her car and left.

She returned home and parked. She immediately saw Peters standing next to the driver's door.

Peters smelled of alcohol and demanded to see his daughter. "Don't make me start shooting," the woman recalled Peters saying. "Don't make me shoot myself in front of my daughter."

The grandmother said Peters kept putting his hand on a bulge on his hip that she thought was a gun.

The woman then reached for her cell phone and Peters grabbed her and threatened to break her wrist, the complaint said. He took the phone and smashed it.

The grandmother then started honking the car horn. When Peters tried to grab his daughter, the grandmother yelled for someone to call 911, according to the complaint.

That's when prosecutors say Barrett heard the commotion and started dialing his cell phone.

Journal Sentinel reporters Ryan Haggerty and John Diedrich contributed to this report.

            That phone was certainly miraculous.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

When you can't find any examples of brave citizen gunmen stopping massacres, I suppose this kind of thing will have to do. 30,000 gun deaths a year but hey, a guy stopped someone from getting beaten up.

The Mayan Palace example is questionable, as it relies purely on opinion. I'll give you the others though. I'm still interested in how they counter balance the 10,000 odd gun killings a year though.

Shall we start mentioning the countless examples of people who could have walked away with a busted lip but instead ended up on a morgue slab because some dick pulled a gun?

Yep. The woman curled up in a fetal position on the ground as she was being kicked by a much larger man was clearly only going to get a busted lip.
