  • How many comps do you use at the same time?

I have three laptops open on my desk and side table, which seems a tad decadent to me, but I'll bet some of you have more.

As I upgrade I keep the old ones going until they fall over. The oldest has no fan or working battery. It sits on a fan base and uses mains power only, but has a big screen.

I'm using this one, the newest, to post, hang out, check out the news, U-tube etc. Unfortunately I paid someone 100 baht ($5) to put windows on it, which is all in Thai..

The second comp I'm using to work, mainly managing E-mail, I'm buying a house. It has the good printer with scanner. The second printer is an old laser...

On the third comp, the big one I bought at Camp Eggers PX in Kabul, I have a game going all the time, currently either Total war or Call of Duty II...it still has Kabul's filthy dust on it.

The laptops aren't networked because they all dogs with different fleas, different operating systems etc. and I don't want them conflicting with each other. But they all have the same Wifi source. The newest comp has the cable.

    For no particular reason

I have a laptop, with a smartphone (not mine) charging off it's USB. There's another laptop in a bag hanging on the wall but it's pretty ghetto at this point. The battery holds a few seconds charge and the power plug has the common laptop problem so it just turns off if someone walks by too loudly.

There's also a pride of cats keeping a close eye on dinner (that may include me if I keel over). I like to think of them as organic kill-bots.

Hey, if you somehow combined those 3 laptops, you might end up with one big boy computer!

It depends. Sometimes I have two PC's going... one for gaming, one for random **** like reference, music, youtube, etc

Right now, I'm just using a dual monitor setup on the gaming machine. My other machine is downstairs hooked up to the plasma. If their both in the same room, I'll keep the bigger monitor on a single display setup and use my others in some sort of multi-monitor configuration. Alt-tabbing is annoying if I'm playing a game in full screen. I like being able to browse gaming wikis for information without disrupting my game.

The machines are comparable in performance. One has nvidia cards. The other has AMD. I might buy another 30 inch dell monitor for dual 2560x1600 awesomeness.

My desk is kind of a shelf with an extending arm for two keyboards and mice. The monitors are on arms as well. I built the thing myself out of scrap wood from old tv stands and whatnot... gave it matte finish black paint job with a little desert camo stuff going on. It's subtle enough to not look like I'm going for some sort of military look.

Gaming is fun on this setup. I've got 5.1 speakers... room for peripherals.

I've been thinking about taking over another room to build a more ridiculous setup. One of my monitors is a 27 inch samsung @ only 1080p. It was around $250, which seems to be a good price for that size. I figured I would test it out and maybe get two more for 5760x1080 spanned across the three displays. Multi-monitor isn't supported in a lot of games, so i might use that more for modeling and whatnot. If I really want to go crazy, I suppose I would get two more 30 inch dells. But I like focusing the hardware on one display for more serious games with pretty graphics. I don't find multi-monitor gaming to be terribly useful. It's a bit of a gimmick. FOV settings are hard to tweak. I don't think having the extra bit of display for my peripherals gives one an advantage in say, multiplayer fps. It's just fun sometimes. The bezels annoy me a little too much at times.

I really want a 4k monitor. It sucks the industry has a hard on for 1080p. I blame consoles for this. I see bull**** VR even making headway with the oculus rift. **** that ****. Give me higher resolutions!

        cats

One of my guys used to love sitting on crt monitors back in the day. He tried to climb on the first thin lcd I got. I knew he wouldn't like it, so I didn't bother trying to swat him off of it. But it was funny watching him evaluate whether or not he could fit on it.

One of my sister's cats would try to sleep on the plasma. He's one of those ******* alley cat types that doesnt mind his appendages hanging off the sides. He knows he's a bad cat. Yelling at him usually gets him to stop mischief. Then he'll run over to you and fall down... "I surrender! Pet me plz"

                  Just one comp, a laptop.

I bring it downstairs and hijack my wife's desktop when I need to multitask.

1 desktop which is my main computer. 3 laptops, only one of which is currently working. 3 7" tablets (google Nexus, Kindle Fire and a Kindle Fire HD). Frequently the Desktop and all three tablets would be in use (Wife and two daughters using the tabs). I have been known to play Civ on the desktop with my laptop playing a book on CD.

At work I have my development box (beefy desktop) and a relatively weak laptop. I've only got one monitor for the dev box, so I usually have an API reference open on the laptop while I program on the dev box.

At home I have a netbook, a NAS, and a beefy laptop. I keep the netbook and NAS on 24/7 and I usually use the netbook for travel since it's 1/3 the size of the laptop, and I only keep the laptop powered on while I'm using it. I never actually use the netbook and laptop at the same time, unless I've logged into my netbook via the laptop.

Right now I have 1 laptop at work in a dock (using it now), one work laptop at home, two personal laptops (Vista and Win7, one down with a virus), three home desktops (Win7, WinXP, Win98, the first two are down with issues), and about a half dozen older computers in varying degrees of functionality, inlcuding a Tandy 1000 SX.

Oooooh yes. My first "real" computer, bought in 1987, ostensibly for college work but really to play Starflight.
