    • It does seem (based on Twitter) that they are going to release regions with bigger borders within the near future as well. Lead designer said they think about it "constantly," and given the way they're so responsive to feedback, it seems very likely. That plus eventual mod support will make this a much better product.

      • Mods are coming whether they support them or not. They are just trying to get on the right side of this thing.

        • #1 global population city on the leaderboards (test server). Seems mostly R/I:

          • I really am not sure how that is #1 with a university, only the biggest ****ing space hog in the whole game.

              • Actually, I was looking at most pop in region. That city had upwards of 414,000 people. Region was around 600,000.

                • You can see it if you go to test server and sort by global pop. Leaderboards are still ****ed for all the other ones.

                    • My oil-fired power plant with two generators has never left me short of power, ever. I'm starting to wonder if there's an actual point to nuclear or anything else.

                        • While I don't usually side with HC, he's probably right. The JSON and JavaScript has been figured out, but there is other code as well; just like Civ4, things like the graphics engine are exe-only. The crypto here is the secure connection to the server, which even if the general server instructions were in the JSON, the private keypairs would not be exposed there.

You know I do study computer science, you can disagree with my politics but this is my field, no need for the reluctance, thanks

Anyway yes, they presumably use some sort of public-private key crypto like RSA to confirm server identity, and the private key for that isn't gonna be anywhere in the code, be it JSON or the executable. Doesn't mean someone can't come up with a hack to get around it, but it'd be a *****, and would probably involve editing the program binaries.

I agree that it probably will, but it could take a very long time. Best case is that they can just edit the EXE to remove the check for the server, more likely case is they have to do a ****ton of hacks to make it pass checksums and other things.
