  • The end is near: Fast Food now outsells all other restaurant food in France.

Fast food has outsold table service restaurants for the first time in France, according to new research.

France has, for decades, been on the front lines against American style fast food but it appears all that opposition has just slowed the advance of "le snacking" and not stopped it as Fast food officially now makes up 54% of all restaurant sales in France. What do you folks think about this development?

Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated.

Good. Maybe more French chefs will come here instead.

The change from bistro to sandwich bar has been attributed to tougher economic times, and an improvement in the quality of convenience meals.
Improvement in quality... so maybe it's fast food that's getting assimilated?

To be fair, "Fast Food" in this case simply means "not table service". They don't mean Frenchmen are all eating Le Big Macs. Presumably this is largely people eating at sandwich stands and such.

I'd also wonder how much of this might be due to lowering prices in restaurants. After all, if they have to compete on price in these tough economic times, without any change in the Fast(er) Food sales you could have a significant downward shift in table-service sales.

An interesting part of the equation is that French people have turned to fast food in record numbers during the economic down turn. As most Americans already know fast food offers the most bang for the buck in terms of calories per dollar/euro so people who want to eat out but who are short of cash find they can get a meal much more cheaply at a fast food place than at a traditional sit down restaurant.

Another interesting thing is that despite the current scandal about horse meat being labeled as beef in the EU sales of horse meat in France are now hitting record highs. Now, horse meat has traditionally always been eaten in France but until very recently only the very old (60 years plus) seemed to buy it and newspapers were predicting that eating horse would become a thing of the past in France but due to the recession, and the low price of horse meat compared to beef, suddenly young people are all lining up to buy horse meat. Part of it is the lower price and part of it is that horses are still mostly fed traditional feeds in France so people worried about additives, hormones, and excessive use of anti-biotics in beef can still get more or less organically raised horse meat for 40% less than the price of beef.

In Paris, fashionable chefs have been putting horsemeat back on their menus.

There are two ways to look at quality. One is consistency in product so that no matter where you go in the world the product always tastes exactly the same. Now, this is an accomplishment in itself because it means they have so refined their process that it doesn't matter if you're in Bolivia, Mongolia, an island in the south Pacific, or Africa, or Europe, the US, or Central America because the customer always gets an identical product which tastes exactly like what they thought they ordered. The second involves the "quality" of the goods used to produce the product; I.E. the best meat, the best ingredients, and how they are cooked. This is why different people can both be talking about quality but not even remotely be talking about the same thing.

Some is and some isn't. It just depends on what your goals are.

If your goal is to starve part of the human population then organic food is pretty awesome.
