My mom stashes away holiday decorations that she never uses but loves throwing away useful things. If a roll of toilet paper has 10-20 sheets left, she'll throw it away. But before going to the store, she'll spend hours clipping coupons... saving maybe 10-20 cents on stuff. Meanwhile, her job pays her upwards of $100-150 an hour. So she wastes 2 hours in order to save 20 bucks. Seems like a net loss to me.
To us, it is the BEAST.

At your age, it's hard to imagine that you have anything that is actually "really old crap."

It seems like hoarders are now called "Preppers" or "Doomsday Preppers" in many right wing circles now. They effectively are nothing but hoarders however they claim to be preparing for the end of the world because they're so freaked out that a negro now runs the show.

My mum does the same thing with coupons and inefficiently spending time going between different stores to save pennies. It's only recently that I realized that the saving money thing is like a hobby or game for her, she gets genuine pleasure from knowing she's found something she sees as a bargain. It makes a lot more sense to me now.

Preppers tend to be organized. Psychotically paranoid... but organized. Hoarders keep garbage and **** around. Actual ****. Like from their pets.

While growing up my best friend's dad was a total hoarder. They guy just wouldn't get rid of anything including stacks and stacks of old newspapers. He had filled up their garage to the point no one could get in it, then he filled up the family van (which had to be unpacked if anyone wanted to use it), he filled up the attic, the house was a cluttered mess, and he had 3-4 storage units full of junk too. And it really was mostly just junk.

Fair enough. In my mind, it's stuff from elementary school.

This is a great cue for him to tell you about his collection of coprolites.

I'm not sure if I'm really a hoarder- but I can always delude myself that I'm a fan or a collector. Actually I read the books I buy and play the music I buy, so I'm not a 'proper' collector- those strange people who collect books, records, what have you and don't play them, read them....

I knew it was getting bad when my friend (who is a librarian) said her idea of an enjoyable holiday would be staying with me and arranging my books.

That's not hoarding, that's being discerning. Hoarding is keeping massive computer printouts of Coca Cola sales in 1974.

I woud love to see your books one day Molly.
