What is the point of owning guns?

Last saturday I fired 100 shells of birdshot.
When I go to the rifle range I shoot an average of 50-70 rounds or so.
I go shooting usually about once a week.
Tell me, how many times do you think a mugger actually fires his weapon?
I'd like to see if you're willing to stop making ridiculous statements, and then when challenged, backing them up with empty ad-hominems and single emoticons.

OK, I'm calling DL. No one can be this ridiculous. Not even me!“As a lifelong member of the Columbia Business School community, I adhere to the principles of truth, integrity, and respect. I will not lie, cheat, steal, or tolerate those who do.”
"Capitalism ho!"

How can I possibly challenge the logic of "I fired fiddy bullets"?
How many of them were magic?“As a lifelong member of the Columbia Business School community, I adhere to the principles of truth, integrity, and respect. I will not lie, cheat, steal, or tolerate those who do.”

You completely missed the point.
The point was that my activity, which is totally legal, and consists of shooting flying clay disks, uses up a lot of ammunition and I would be hit hard by an ammo tax.
On the other hand the guy that tried to rob those air force cadets today has probably rarely or never fired whatever gun he had, and thus an ammo tax pretty much doesn't affect him at all.
I'm sorry you're too idiotic to get this concept without having it spelled out step by step for you.

And as it turns out, the vast majority of guns used in crimes are already illegally owned anyway so licensing and registration wouldn't do anything to help that.
Which illegal ownership has been made much easier by decades of "gummint gon' try take mah gunz" paranoia about registration. There would still be illegal guns out there, not not near as many as are facilitated by the cash and carry private market.
(snip), nor are they prevented by grabbing criminals who are illegally carrying weapons.
So we should let criiminals illegally carrying guns go? Methinks you misspoke there. When all else fails, blame brown people. | Hire a teen, while they still know it all. | Trump-Palin 2016. "You're fired." "I quit."

Registration as a precursor to confiscation wouldn't require any black helicopters and it has happened elsewhere, but I'd like you to observe what happened with the Westchester Journal News recently. Anyway, I was just saying why groups like the NRA oppose it.

In any case, most federal gun crimes get pleaded away for information on drug rings and the like. The DoJ doesn't prosecute very many violators that the ATF catches.

For those who aspire to live in a high cost, high tax, big government place, our nation and the world offers plenty of options. Vermont, Canada and Venezuela all offer you the opportunity to live in the socialist, big government paradise you long for. –Senator Rubio

No, I mean it's difficult or impossible to catch and punish people who do it except as another charge to tack on.
