I'd argue California as well, has a similar argument to Texas. Florida too. All of these three would survive as independent states, given their size. There is an argument for 'continuity of existence' prior to their formation as a state within the Union. All of them petitioned (with the exception of Florida) which was purchased, to enter the United States. Texas, does have a special deal though - they signed a special deal when they came over. Just because California wasn't smart enough to do that isn't Texas's fault

You *have* been missed, MtG. It's nice to have these interesting discussions at the end of the day. Thanks!

You're welcome. The Texican's special deal was made null and void at bayonet point. Secession ain't gonna happen, though - it would be stupid of any state to secede at this point. Commerce, citizenship issues, international recognition, etc. States would lose far more than they'd gain over some philoophical issue.

          Nice mischaracterization.

From all the Yankees surrendering? Last I checked Texas was undefeated in the civil war.

Oddly enough 'no taxation without representation' was a philosophical issue too. Plenty of states worldwide smaller than 25 million people with fewer natural resources and surface area. Texas has gone at it before on it's own. No reason she couldn't do so again now - given her much larger population.

What, are you counting the away battles? When were the Yankees victorious in Texas?

You might wish to treat it as one, but it wasn't a game to the thousands of men who died. Texas picked the wrong side and was beaten and shamed along with the rest. Should have listened to Sam Houston.

Well setting aside things like the occupation of Galveston, what on earth does that matter? They joined the war on the wrong side, lost thousands of soldiers fighting in the war, lost the war and were occupied by federal troops and made to rejoin the union. just because Texas is in the arse end of nowhere and was spared the bulk of the fighting does not make their utter defeat any less complete.

Here's a thought. Why don't all of you who aren't in Texas, not worry about Texas. Texas isn't worrying about you.
Life is not measured by the number of breaths you take, but by the moments that take your breath away.

So you're saying that Texas wasn't defeated in battle? I rest my case.

Texas is clearly irresistable slowwy. They can't help fawning all over her. How can you blame them? Sexy and sweet? It's devastating.
