My personal living expenses were about $5k for 2012. ($2.5k actual out of pocket expense.)

$20k/year would be enough to add a hectare or two to the plantation each year, finish up the house quickly (1-2 years) and even hire staff (driver, maid/cook) if I was so inclined. Retiring with 30+ hectares of land (even used "traditionally"), a house, no debt, would be a pretty nice retirement.
