I left that one out. Thanks.

Voodoo and quackery by the same doctors that say that red meat increases your cholesterol levels? My 73 HDL, 50 LDL, and 31 mg/DL triglycerides asks who the real quacks are?

I take a multivitamin, 1000mg of calcium (to prevent bone injuries), 3600mg of fish oil, and 20,000 IU's of Vitamin D (yeah I know that's 5000% RDA but it's still well below toxic levels).

I'm probably pissing most of the stuff anyway, especially the vitamin D, but for a few bucks every few months, I'm covering my bases and hedging in favor of the possibility that some of the stuff might actually help physical performance and reduce the risk of injury. It's well worth the shot in the dimly lit room.

Not sure if it's worth it if you're broke and/or not physically active.

I am no longer on any perscription medicines.

I might need to be though, should visit a doctor again.

          Vitamens/etc that I take when I remember/my wife remembers/etc are:

          Iron
          Multi-vitamin
          Omega-3

At various times I have taken on doctors orders:

            anti-ulcer
            beta-blockers (HB pills)
            a non beta-blocker HB pill
            iron
            thyroid pill

Possibly if I went back to a doctor again I would need to take the last two again.

I was almost given cholesterol pills too, but I made my numbers good the natural way.

Alby is the same person who advocates a "paleo" diet. I think I trust Guynemer, a licensed pediatrician, a little more...

Right, because medical science says the only thing that influences cholesterol is the eating of red meat. You got us there, Alby!

And what is wrong with a paleo diet? How is it not the optimal diet for our species when it is what we ate for our entire existence save the last few thousand years? I also engage in intermittent fasting, going 14-24 hours without eating anything. I train fasted (endurance training in a glycogen-depleted state) then feast on meat and vegetables.

Again, my cholesterol numbers are exemplary: 73 HDL, 50 LDL, and 31 mg/DL triglycerides. Ask your doctor how many people come through with higher HDL than LDL.

You're a ****ing idiot if you can't think of a hundred reasons why a modern diet would be better than the kind available to hunter-gatherers.

Did I say it's the ONLY thing? No. But all you ever hear is how bad red meat is and how it is correlated with high cholesterol and heart disease. I eat 1-2 pounds of red meat almost daily. Even with no family history of heart disease and superb genetics, the medical establishment would say I should have high cholesterol levels considering the quantity of meat I consume.

Our bodies are not biologically adapted to a grain-based diet. You think 4000 years is enough time to change human biology? Who's the ****ing idiot now?

Has it occured to you that your substantial exercise regimen might have more to do with it?

Has nothing to do with what we're adapted to, moron. We aren't perfectly adapted anyway--we can arrange superior diets for ourselves. You do realize that it doesn't actually matter where your calories come from, or other nutrients? As long as you are meeting your requirements, you're fine.

I wouldn't trust Guy's statement literally, since I doubt it was intended as anything other than a pot shot at a specific subset of vitamin/supplement usage/potential.

Paleo is more than what you eat. It's a lifestyle. Paleo requires an endurance-based exercise regimen. Otherwise, you're half-assing it. Many paleo practitioners also fast and put their training at the end of the fast; essentially simulating a hunt: long-time no eating, run a couple miles (the chase), do burpees and pullups (the kill), carry around a log (head back to camp), and eat meat (the hunted animal).

This is what human biology demands.
