          It isn't hindsight, it is map reading. You said, "but that would only have saved some couple of days walking." It was not a "couple days" to go.

          The eagles flew them nearly a hundred miles, and it was another 250+ miles to Erebor. From Hobbiton to Rivendell took them 38 days at about 10 miles a day, so it was about another month of foot travel from there.

            Not to mention they lost their ponies by that point, so survival via foraging on foot was assured.
