I mean that's not how guns are sold at gun shows. I've been to gun shows. Actual, licensed gun dealers go to gun shows and sell their guns and they do background checks. When I bought my shotgun at a gun show, they did a background check. In fact, the gun show had an explicit rule that all sales at the show had to be conducted with a background check, i.e. no private sales were allowed. That is a standard rule throughout the country.
Not having Ireland awash with legal guns certainly did work well. The place would have been even more of a bloodbath otherwise. Of course there wouldn't have been so many illegal ones there if stupid ****s in Boston and other US cities hadn't kept funding the terrorists who blew up city centres, pubs and hotels and murdered hundreds of people in cold blood.
I have to agree with the general notion that Boston ****ing sucks and is full of terrible people
If there is no sound in space, how come you can hear the lasers? ){ :|:& };:
I've been to several gun shows, and the only people selling were FFL dealers running tables, and they're all required to run NICS checks. I've sold a bolt action 30-06 to a friend of mine, but I know him, and I know he's able to pass a background check. Even private sellers who are exempt from background checks aren't likely to knowingly sell to a dangerous person.
They can sell to anyone they please as long as they don't admit to 'suspecting' the person would fail a background check, no? Yet we should assume that everyone selling a gun is a nice person?
What about that 1997 study showing 40% of guns being sold through private owners?
(BTW our government isn't in the habit of confiscating previously-legal property without compensation; in fact I believe that is unconstitutional. Good luck finding the money to buy 300 million guns.)
No problem - just introduce a heavy tax on gun ownership
With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
I strongly doubt the accuracy of that study. In any case, gun sales between residents of different states must go through an FFL I believe.
Felch knows the man can pass a background check probably because he's bought a gun before and thus passed one. Bear in mind Maryland conducts fairly thorough background checks before every purchase.
How often do you hear of mentally ill people driving into a crowd or blowing themselves up (not counting terrorists with a cause)? There was one guy in Cardiff earlier this year, but he "only" managed to kill 1 and injure 13 others.
It is much easier to avoid an out of control vehicle than it is to avoid a bullet travelling at a couple of hundred metres per second. I'd imagine that many of the spree killers do it because they want to see people die, a bomb belt isn't going to let you do that, but a gun is. Someone with a knife needs to be within an arm's length of you to do any damage, someone with a gun doesn't (and stabbing someone is a more visceral act, so I'd imagine there's more of a hesitation factor, plus it requires some strength to stab multiple people multiple times).

How do you know that someone who's buying a gun from you over the internet or via a newspaper advert or at a gun show is from a different state? Surely the whole point here is that it allows a virtual black market where background checks and suchlike become irrelevant for getting hold of guns.

Well the seller would be committing a crime if they sold to someone from out of state, and I don't think that ignorance would be an excuse. People who make private sales realize that if the gun is used in a crime, then the most recent 4473 form will lead right to them. They don't usually take chances selling to sketchy people.
