Unlike Alby I've had sex and fired a selection of firearms underground in Prague.

Some European countries (not us) have proportional representation and can be called democratic. In the US and UK, most voters, your vote counts for zero.

          • Depends on what election you're talking about. The presidential election isn't the only important one.

But it is the one they spend more money on by a decent margin.

I still can't get why so many people are blase that their vote is meaningless.

                Step 2...

Look at what percentage of homicides involving a firearm are committed using an assault rifle.

                Step 3...

                Draw a conclusion.

Well, according to the NRA about 15% of firearms in private hands are semi-automatic rifles (They just say semi-automatic, but I think if it included pistols and shotguns it would be much higher than 15%).

According to the FBI, rifles account for about 5% of firearm homicides. And that count for rifles includes all rifles, not just the semi-autos.

So, what's your point? That 15% of the guns cause 5% of the deaths?

                  Exactly.

                  • Considering handgun bans are unconstitutional, I'm not sure what any gun control measure that cannot legally restrict the gun that is used in nearly 95% of homicides would hope to achieve.

                    • And if you can't dodge handgun bullets, you deserve to be shot.

And while it's not a perfect example, it happened about a week ago so I figured it was pertinent.
It's proof that a specific individual civilian who was trained as a security guard and had his gun card and was with kids so didn't want to draw fire or miss and wound someone downrange wasn't a moron in that particular situation. You can't generalize it to the population at large in all lethal force defense scenarios.

                        • Remember that there was an armed police officer at Columbine High School the day of the massacre. The two attackers overwhelmed him and forced him to retreat. Maybe if he had had a grenade launcher.....

My honest guess is it would be very low. I would think handguns were used in most homicides.

                                Indeed so...

In 2005, 8,478 handgun homicides and 2,868 homicides by other guns. Knives accounted for 2,147 homicides. In some years (such as 1998), knives accounted for more homicides than all non-handguns.

The stats bear out the common sense. The vast majority of homicides are not these mass shootings by crazy middle class white young men. Most homicides are street crime and handguns are what criminals use.
