There will one day be no more suffering and death, so I wouldn't say we need sin. It's a mystery to me, but it's good to have free will.

Edit: I should add something here because I realised that this statement makes it sound as if I believe in the doctrine of the Fall. There are two kinds of suffering, physical and spiritual. Some physical suffering is unavoidable, and death is unavoidable. But some times we have to choose either physical or spiritual suffering, just as we choose between physical and spiritual joy. So I don't believe that suffering is punishment, because it allows us to make real choices.
