  • Asperger's Syndrome now part of autism spectrum

The Aspergers people will be very anxious about it and the autistic won't care. That should be therapeutic...

Not really "anxious" here. Someone once asked Dr. Tony Atwood what the difference was between Asperger's and High-Functioning Autism. He replied, "they are spelled totally differently." I've been using the terms interchangeably on those rare occasions that I tell someone what I am.

I've got a friend who works with kids with autism, who says that when the kids start to come out of their shell they haven't yet acquired empathy i.e. they act as though they have Asperger's

That's one of the aspects. One problem is that some of the people with autism are just jerks and use the label as a defence.

My grandson is mildly autistic, so we've been aware of the correlation.

How is this a change? I've always just assumed that aspergers is just milder autism.

Here is a more interesting question: is autism/aspbergers a legitimate personality difference or should it be treated as a disease and cured? I have known many people with some ASD over the years and I am leaning towards treat, but am ambivalent--that sort of attitude has led us to do some pretty bad things to people in the past.

I should clarify, I am referring to the high functioning cases only. Obviously there is only one choice if you can't function in society.
