  • I think you're misconstruing what HC said. Chinese, Koreans, Vietnamese, and Japanese are different, just as the Irish, English, French and Swedes are all different. But while Irish Americans might harbor resentment towards the English, and everybody loves mocking the French, to somebody from outside Europe they'd all seem pretty much the same. He contrasted East Asians with Indians and said that it makes no sense to lump them together. Frankly, he's right. Indians should either be on their own, or attached to their linguistic cousins in Iran and Europe.
    John Brown did nothing wrong.

      1. Sever their relationship with the religious-right fringe and Tea Party. Seriously; you don't need pathological bigots as a voting demographic to win elections.

      2. Find an effective way to reach out to racial minority groups such as blacks and Hispanics. Continuing to ignore them in your party's efforts to reach out to your traditional groups will continue to come with costs.

      3. Publicly and affirmatively welcome and accept gay conservatives such as GOProud, and Log Cabin Republicans. Many of them support you for time being, but continuing to take their votes for granted without including them in campaign events and appearances and talking with them on issues will just alienate more conservative gays who may start to feel that the Republican party does not want them under their so-call "big" tent.

      4. Abandon homophobic stances on social issues concerning gay people. Gay marriage will not destroy the fabric of American society. Giving gay people equal employment protection will not allow gay people to have public sex at their workplaces. Keeping the reversal of DADT intact is not having any detrimental effect on military morale or their combat effectiveness. This will give independent gay voters and just-to-left gay voters actual, meaningful choices between voting for Democratic candidates or Republican candidates.

      5. Stop your war on women. Women have the same right to make their own healthcare decisions regarding their own bodies as men do. Abortion is legal in America, nor do contraceptives kill babies; get over it. There were a significant increase in women who voted for Democrats over Republicans this campaign year because many of them were offended by proposals to have men make healthcare decisions for women.
Quick summary. The only way for them to survive is to become Democrats.

I was just curious if Gary Johnson was on the Illinois ballot.

            • Yes, he was. It was a toss up. But from that survey that was posted here, I identified with her stances 1% more than his.

              • Cuisine is kind of amusing - the regions in China have ridiculous differences in cuisine (Szechwan and Catonese are not exactly the same stuff).

It kind of seems like a ridiculous lumping of everyone together - Like a Chinese person saying the cuisine of France and the UK are the same.

This. We lump Europeans together all the time, unless we need to be a little more precise. We lump Asians together all the time that makes no sense at any level of precision.

                    • Here at CMU and at TJ and middle school, the schools I attended that had significant numbers of Asians (of all types), it was always understood that if you said "Asian" you meant far east and southeast, if you said "Indian" you meant India, and if you said "Middle Eastern" you meant anyone from the Muslim world (except Indonesia but I never knew any Indonesians).

No. It's possible for the Republican party to become a fiscally conservative party, but moderate/centrist on social issues. Right now, too much of the Republican party is right-wing on social issues.

So you think the Republican party can just continue as it always has, being a party for just white, straight men?

I misspoke. Instead of "always been," I should have said, "always been since end of Reconstruction."
