  • Chicago pot smokers take a hit

Chicago police find about 1500 plants worth about $10 million.

CHICAGO (AP) — In Chicago, a bustling urban metropolis where skyscrapers are as likely to sprout up as anything a farmer might plant, someone decided there was just enough room to grow something a little more organic: Marijuana.

The plants grew even taller than the tallest Chicago Bulls. However, just days before the crop on a chunk of land the size of two football fields would have been ready to harvest, a police officer and county sheriff's deputy in a helicopter spotted it as they headed back to their hangar about three miles away.

On Wednesday, a day after the discovery of the largest marijuana farm anyone at the police department can remember, officers became farmers for a day as they began to chop down about 1,500 marijuana plants that police said could have earned the growers as much as $10 million.

No arrests had been made as of Wednesday, and police were still trying to determine who owns the property that housed the grow site on the city's far South Side. But police said they were hopeful that because of the size of the operation, informants or others might provide tips about those involved, including a man seen running from the area as the helicopter swooped low.

James O'Grady, the commander of the department's narcotics division, said they've never seen anything like it before, in part because Chicago's harsh winters mean growers have a lot less time to plant, grow and harvest marijuana than their counterparts in less inclement places such as California and Mexico. The bumper crop was likely planted in spring, O'Grady said.

Add to that the urban sprawl: there are few spots in Chicago where such an operation could go unnoticed because of all the buildings, roads and residents. The growers took pains to ensure their crop was largely hidden by a canopy of trees and surrounding vegetation.

"Somebody put a lot of thought into it," O'Grady said. "But they probably didn't anticipate the helicopter."

Chicago Police Officer Stan Kuprianczyk, a pilot, said police helicopters flew "over it all the time," to and from their hangar, without spying the grow site. Yet somehow, a number of factors came together to allow Cook County Sheriff's Deputy Edward Graney to spot the plants.

"We had the right altitude, the right angle, the right sunlight, and I happened to be glancing down," said Graney. He said he initially spotted five plants or so through the trees before he asked Kuprianczyk to circle around for a closer look.

"We just happened to be right over a small hole in the trees and we looked down," Kuprianczyk said.

They also happened to have the right training, Graney said, explaining that just a few weeks earlier a much smaller operation in suburban Chicago prompted them to fly over and videotape the scene so they might be able to recognize marijuana if they ever saw it from the air again.

So, by the time Graney spotted the marijuana plants, which are a much brighter shade of green than the surrounding vegetation, he had a pretty good idea what he was looking at.

Superintendent Garry McCarthy, whose officers are more used to intercepting shipments of marijuana grown elsewhere or discovering hydroponic growing operations inside buildings, said the discovery of the marijuana is significant in a larger fight against street violence.

Those involved with narcotics, whether it is marijuana, heroin or cocaine, purchase firearms with their profits and have shown they're willing to use them to protect their business, he said.

"That's where the violence comes in, the competition for the markets," he said.

The sad thing is the plants should have been worth about the same as a tobacco plant which is to say not much. It's only prohibition which pushes the prices up to such absurd levels.

The sad thing is they could be funding something useful like education with this plant instead wasting a bunch of money on a war on drugs.

Take away their union contracts and suddenly paying them more is a good idea. You could evaluate them on merit.

Hunting down outdoor growops is a late summer/early fall pasttime for the cops around here.

The aren't so good at it in Alberta however:

                      Please don’t smoke the daisies.

It turns out that more than 1,600 suspected marijuana plants that a special police squad ripped out of a yard in Lethbridge, Alta. this summer are a species of daisy.

The bust, which was announced with fanfare in July, has homeowner Ryan Thomas Rockman scratching his head over the confusion. Just the same he’s happy the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team (ALERT) has dropped the charge of producing a controlled substance.

“It made me look like a villain and it made them look silly,†Rockman told the Lethbridge Herald, insisting all 1,624 plants seized were Montauk daisies — a fall-blooming perennial he’s been growing for a decade.

“It baffles me, to be honest. At the same time, I don’t want to try to point the finger of blame at them either because they’re still just trying to do their mandate and make it home every day,†said Rockman, 41, who faces other drug charges in connection with the raid.

Insp. Dan Konowalchuk, head of the combined forces special regional enforcement units, defended the officers’ actions.

“I don’t think there is anything at this point for the guys to apologize for. They acted on what they believed to be the best information they had at the time,†Konowalchuk told the Star Thursday.

“First of all, we don’t know for sure they’re daisies,†he said, even though an effort was made to identify the plant species through experts.

The test results, which came back this week, clearly prove the seized plants weren’t marijuana, even though they resembled the hallucinogenic plant.

                      Tax money well spent.

                        Another amusing story...

Here in fake London we recently had a group of young guys decide they would try to hunt down an illegal growop so they could (presumably) score some free smoke. They apparently didn't consider what might happen if they actually found one.

For an additional laugh, check out the suspect's name... We had an APB out for several days for Ronald MacDonald...

London police say a man who sparked a massive search of the city’s east end is wanted for firing a rifle at a group of men looking for pot.

Police say the incident began Saturday when three men were in the area of Rebecca Rd. in Middlesex County, looking for marijuana growing in surrounding fields.

The three men were confronted by a man carrying a rifle.

Police did not release the exact time of the incident, saying only it happened between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m.

A confrontation led to the man pointing the rifle at the other men and hitting one in the head with the butt of the weapon.

The man told the men to leave the area and as they ran, he fired several shots in their direction, police said.

Ronald Joseph MacDonald, 54, is wanted on nine firearms charges and two pot-related charges, including production of marijuana.

                        The search for MacDonald continues.

The hunt turned parts of the east end of London into a police zone, with officers cutting short a Sunday charity golf tournament at Forest City National Golf Club.

Robins Hill and Rebecca roads were closed as city police and OPP scoured the area.

                        A weapon hasn’t been recovered.

Police are asking people not to approach MacDonald if they see him and to call 911.
