  • Two weeks notice rejected?

I put in my two weeks notice at my hotel two weeks ago tomorrow morning but I got a call from them telling me they don't have a replacement yet so I'm scheduled to work again next weekend. I managed to compromise to be off Friday night (when I work two jobs: Friday job then overnight til 7am) but still work Saturday night.

They really rejected my two weeks notice. Can they do that?

I mean I can just not show up but still... the audacity that they laid a lot of people off around when I started, terminating them effective immediately upon arrival to work. They even brought in security and gave people 15 minutes to leave the building. Yet when I quit they reject my two weeks notice?

Corporate America... how does it work?

Did you put your notice in writing?

With the unemployment rate what it is now they just can't find a person to work the shift? Is it physically possible for you to work this shift with your other job or does the timing conflict? If it doesn't actually conflict then I'd keep working it just to get extra money and to get a good reference. If it does conflict then you need to tell them as soon as you can that you're sorry but you gave the needed notice and your other job conflicts.

My Friday (today) is like this... wake up at 6am, get ready, commute to work, work until around 6pm, commute back home, chill for 2 hours (no, I can't sleep; not tired enough), head out to work, work until 7am Saturday morning, get home around 8am. It's a 26 hour day.

I can handle it but why? It's rough going for me (stupid serotonin) and it screws with my sleep cycle... plus it screws with stuff. Like I have a USMC physical event at 0900 tomorrow morning until noon. I really don't want to look like I'm not putting out when I'll be exhausted.

Does your state have labour laws?

How long have you been with the hotel?

In Manitoba, until the completion of the first 10 weeks of employment, an employer may terminate without notice or an employee may quit without notice.

Your duty, however, is to your new employer. Don't do anything to risk the new job.

I forget; what did George Costanza do when his GF rejected his breakup? I think it was Susan, but it's been a while since I saw that episode...

The correct answer, particularly given the USMC physical.

Also, it isn't the end of the World if they are short a bell hop. Bell hops are annoying tip seekers - I managed to cart my bags as far as your hotel, I think I can manage getting them to my room. You want a tip? Get a job with a purpose!

I'm more than a bell hop. I'm technically a 'butler'. I do room service and housekeeping as well.

Do you need them as a reference? I hope the answer is "no." If this is the case, then **** 'em. If this isn't the case, then think long and hard why you need a reference for your bellhopping (sorry, "butlering") skills. You're a college graduate for ****'s sake.
