    In 1998, James Thomson and his colleagues reported methods for deriving and maintaining human embryonic stem (ES) cells from the inner cell mass of human blastocysts that were produced through in vitro fertilization (IVF) and donated for research purposes [46]. At the same time, another group, led by John Gearhart, reported the derivation of cells that they identified as embryonic germ (EG) cells. The cells were cultured from primordial germ cells obtained from the gonadal ridge and mesenchyma of 5- to 9-week fetal tissue that resulted from elective abortions [41].

    I rest my case.
    EG!

    NOT ES!

    EG = EMBRYONIC GERM CELLS
    ES = EMBRYONIC STEM CELLS

    THAT REPORT EXACTLY BACKS UP WHAT I WAS SAYING - ABORTED FOETUSES HAVE NO USE IN EMBRYONIC STEM CELL RESEARCH!

    YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT THING!

        And on the point of : am I ok that they use EG cells from aborted foetuses for research - yes.

        Am I ok with people buying and selling them - no, not really I think it should be on a donation basis only as with transplants.

          Before we reel out the Nobel prize the Russians tried this approach with some sort of degenerative CNS disease I believe. The results were initially good, but the patient developed a brain tumor later on.

                    Hey paralyzed guy - would you like to walk now, but get a brain tumor later?

                      Is that something of a recurring theme with stem cell research? I know I've heard about something like that before--good results at first, then cancer--but it might have just been the Russian case you describe.

                        And a single case isn't enough to determine that one caused the other, so did they have something else to suggest it was a cause?

                        I note Dr Strangelove didn't suggest it did cause it.

                          I misread that as 'I'm not suggesting that Dr Strangelove caused it'.
