I suppose I should also be thanking them for moving so many businesses and jobs from the Midwest to Virginia and other parts of the South.

I am thankful for them depopulating Detroit and sending Auto Manufacturing jobs South.

The unions were not the ones who relocated jobs. It was the companies' executives that decided to relocate jobs in reaction to the unions.

HC, I don't see any mention of "overseas" job movement in this thread except yours.

I know it's fun to mock MrFun and deride unions but...

He DanS'd it. It originally read "relocate jobs overseas".

My experience with the rank and file was that they were among the most socially repressed mysogynistic homophobic workers I had the misfortune of working with.

What MrFun probably doesn't realize is that unions are fundamentally conservative organizations. They exist to vigorously maintain the status quo and resist any change in employment, wages, etc. They are aligned with the democratic party for purely historical reasons involving leftism.

If the Republican and Democratic parties still related at all to the traditional meaning of "conservative" and "liberal", union supporters would be Republican. However as more of the liberal agenda reached fruition in the 20th century, the Democratic and Republican parties switched places as reformist and reactionary on many issues.

Also as I recall child labor laws actually came more out of offshoots of the Temperance movement, not the labor movement. Weekends, of course, date back to biblical times (the Sabbath). So the OP is at best 2/4.

The American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees. Exactly the bunch who are looting and pillaging the budgets of every State, County, and Municipality.
