It's amazing that he knows that you can't always be happy. Too bad so many christians believe that and teach that. It's probably what he's talking about. Sometimes we are happy and sometimes we aren't. Everything has a season.

        Disown him

nah I suggested he could go and live his grandparents and go to the local public school if he couldn't hack boarding school. His behaviour and attitude suddenly improved.

Jeez AH, you might as well have sent him to BK for an education.

So, are you on one of the 'bungie jumping' islands? How about tattoos and piercings? Maybe a bit of 'going native' will straighten him out?

That's a bad idea. I know people who have left christian school and went to public school. It's not good. They do a 180.

At 15 he'd likely be as tormented and angry at any school I certainly raged against the stupidity and hypocrisy in my place, and that wasn't even a religious school.

Don't forget that angry teenage boy anger and hate aside, and much as he'd never admit it or act like it was true he probably misses his family. I assume he's not thick so writing that in his essay he knows he's going to get in serious ****, and he knows you are going to hear about it so it is a deliberate act to get attention, probably from you, at how unhappy he is. Which has worked. So listen to him and talk to him.
I had the same experience as Mark Twain.

“When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be twenty-one, I was astonished by how much he'd learned in seven years.”

I'm sure in 5 or 6 years you'll get smarter.
