Were you ever involved in a fistfight where you hit back when you were a pre-teen?
What is VJ even talking about? The question is very straight-forward. Did you get into fist-fights? Why would someone lie and what the hell is the worry?
The only problem with it is the pre-teen specification. I got into fights in like 3rd grade, didn't get in any fights while a pre-teen, if it's defined as about 12-14. Then got in a bunch as a teenager and even an adult. If I answered only for pre-teen, my answer of no would characterize me very differently than if the question was if I got into fights period.
And why the specification for pre-teen in the first place, especially when it's not defined in the OP? Was the intention to cover all childhood but VJ in a bit of dumbness only said pre-teen or did he specifically want pre-teen only?

VJ, that's the 'bullying building character' mantra that almost always gets derided but has some basis.
We as males are supposed to be driven to compete and that includes fighting others, defending our turf, etc. The development of the male psyche is stunted if he doesn't experience these primal things.
But it goes beyond primitive man. The fruits of competition are vast, as any capitalist will tell you, and if you never learn to compete, you will struggle in our civilization. The forging grounds for intellectual or leadership competition are on the childhood playgrounds.

As far as I can tell, the only thing you got from all those fights as a kid is an irrational desire to join the marines.

That's the thing. You're supposed to. I never learned. It's really hard to push myself to do it in real life. Of course it's easy if you tell yourself to do it, but there are some situations in life where you have to follow your instincts.
The point is... I think boys who never learn to push back when they're kids grow up to become a little weird. And I think it has subtle, hidden effects on how they will see things when they're adults. And I've been a little angry at myself lately for not realizing this as a kid -- it's so obvious.
This is what I mean. How can you NOT fight a little bit if someone pushes you around?
Well, I never liked to punch in the face, I did it, but I preferred punching in the gut. Turns out that is what you should do in boxing.
ACK!
