BA's and BS's are both subsidized so it can't be expected to fully explain why one would choose a BA and one would choose a BS. It certainly does not mean people are going to college only based on a motivation to maximize lifetime earnings.Originally posted by KrazyHorse View PostReally? Because as far as I can see, education in the us is massively subsidized by the public, private donors and parents, who are generally not the ones making decisions what subjects get studied nor whether the student attends school. It is a classic example of externalized costs.
Doesn't mean you can blanket statement the choice to go after a BA as "stupid" as clearly there are many BA's who do not end up regretting their choice.Further, it is a choice made hy individuals who are barely into their adult lives and who I'm much more likely to believe simply make bad choices (though I give this consideration much lower weight)

Look, if you want to be a writer, spending $200,000 on a Creative Writing degree is still a bad idea.Originally posted by Aeson View PostAlready stated a couple of times in a rather straightforward matter. No one's debating people's freedom to choose stupid things, Aeson. What we're discussing is the stupidity of said things. The fact that some people do something does not make it smart, for ****'s sake. Your chronic misunderstanding of KH's defense of the free market is getting old and is frankly retarded. If there is no sound in space, how come you can hear the lasers?

If you actually have a talent for writing, it will mostly teach you how to delicately tell those who don't that their stories/poems suck. At least, that's what a creative writing class does. The teacher might give you good input on how to improve your work, assuming you have similar stylistic preferences.Originally posted by gribbler View PostLook, if you want to be a writer, spending $200,000 on a Creative Writing degree is still a bad idea.

KH didn't even say anything about how much money he makes.
