  • Philly court vs. the Papacy

A Roman Catholic church official was convicted Friday of child endangerment but acquitted of conspiracy in a groundbreaking clergy-abuse trial, becoming the first U.S. church official convicted of a crime for how he handled abuse claims.

Monsignor William Lynn helped the archdiocese keep predators in ministry, and the public in the dark, by telling parishes their priest was being removed for health reasons and then sending the men to unsuspecting churches, prosecutors said.

Lynn, 61, had faced about 10 to 20 years in prison if convicted of all three counts he faced — conspiracy and two counts of child endangerment. He was convicted on one of the endangerment counts and acquitted of the other two counts, leaving him with the possibility of up to seven years in prison.
The court ruled what all of us except Ben already knew: covering up the abuse is still a crime.

Better watch out, Catholic Church. This sets the precedent for coming after the kiddie fondler coddlers.

I wonder what kind of bizarre, stupid and surreal claim Ben is going to make in this thread.

      What about :

Philly court disrupts gods plan for this universe and his wrath will hit the city with numerous plagues besides those that they already are suffering ?

With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

IIRC his old argument was just that the separation of church and state "cuts both ways." In all likelihood, he will not change his mind about that; he will simply say that this court is acting unjustly.

One, all I said is that a priest accused of child sexual abuse should be tried by the ecclesiastical courts, if he wants to remain a priest. That means getting shipped off to Rome, and, if convicted, not coming back. If he chooses to leave his ministry - then he would be tried just like anyone else.

My concern is that child predators receive on average a sentence of about 2 years. Is releasing them to the secular courts going to protect the public?

          This, is something else entirely.

Abusing the privilege of the Church, in order to cover up what other priests have done? That's conspiracy. I wait for them to try Bishop Weakland. His *** should be in jail, should have been 30 years ago.

He keeps claiming the church is harder on them then the courts would be... TOTAL BS since the Church let them get away with it for years, and not only protected them, but allowed them to continue doing it.

Permanent house arrest, no contact with children, can no longer celebrate mass. When functioning properly, the ecclesiastical courts have far greater scope than secular courts, for the simple reason that the priest has vows that apply for the rest of their life.

Some bishoprics were like this because the bishops there were lax.

                      As Albert's article goes on:

Bevilacqua had the final say on what to do with priests accused of abuse, transferred many of them to new parishes and dressed down anyone who complained, according to testimony. He also ordered the shredding of a 1994 list that warned him that the archdiocese had three diagnosed pedophiles, a dozen confirmed predators and at least 20 more possible abusers in its midst. Prosecutors learned this year that a copy had been stashed in a safe.
Lynn's small fish. He's only coming out because Bevilacqua is dead. What about Weakland? Is Weakland going to get arrested for the same thing? C'mon media, I want to see some articles on Weakland.

In related news, I heard Sandusky was found guilty on 45 out of 48 charges. Didn't hear how long the sentence was, but I imagine he'll spend most, if not all, of his remaining years in prison.

The accused should face the full force of the local legal system first.

Ecclesiastical courts, good or bad, are irrelevant outside the religion.
