Judging by my brief subbing experience, most middle-schoolers will gladly tear each other apart like starving dingos--without mercy, decency or remorse--but generally still want to be the teacher's friend. In high school it was usually the other way around. Which was why I loved my middle-schoolers. Every other day or so I had to report a child sobbing his eyes out in the bathroom/hallway during class, but they were nice to me.

They help the bus driver keep unruly kids in line so that the school bus driver can concentrate on driving the bus without crashing. This poor old grandmother was doing it for virtually no money simply so she could help a local school out and some kids with horrible parents who didn't discipline their children subjected the poor woman to all manner of abuse. Sadly, there is also a racial component to the sensationalizing of this incident because the old lady was white and the children slinging abuse at her were black children. Most of the media has rightly avoided the racial angle but several right wing radio shows and websites have been playing it up for all it is worth.

Due to the public outrage three of the students have now publicly apologized and one of the students parents are requiring their son to do yard work at the 68 year old grandmothers house in order to teach him a lesson. This is good news. The bad news is they're doing this only after the video went viral and the public became outraged at events. To her credit the grandmother is refusing to press charges even after the local DA wanted to do so and instead simply says she would like to speak to the boys about treating other people with respect and says the incident can become a teachable moment.

Okay maybe Oerdin being wrong isn't the bigger issue here. He claims that 'right wingers' are playing it up for all its worth. Maybe they're wrong and they're spreading misinformation that the kids were Black.
