The whole planet and the first area they investigate is the spot with the alien ship.
After having your abdomen cut open and stapled you can still run and jump....lets not forget a hit to the abdomen with a rifle.

They did decide to land in an area that looked it it may have had roads.

Besides, that's a trope in nearly every movie (they only have like 2 hrs to tell the entire story after all).

I loved how after landing they were driving along a vast perfectly flat highway having a debate over whether there were any signs of civilization..

So... your main gripe is that the fictional characters made stupid decisions? How does that increase or decrease the entertainment value of a movie? Is it a realism issue? Do you have any idea how incredibly stupid people are in the real world?

Would you send a group of stupid people on a mission to potentially meet the first alien life?

Given what we eventually learned about Weyland and his intentions, it makes perfect sense that he would pick a lackluster crew.

                      • Darius speaks the truth. I mean, c'mon, NASA (who isn't exactly full of idiots) once screwed something up because they didn't convert from US units of measure into metric.

                        • This is a adventure and science fiction movie directed by Ridley Scott. Charlize Theron is doing really good acting in this movie. She look very beatyful and charming in this movie. All seens in this is really good.
