Wezil, the very purpose of the armed forces is to serve and advance the interests of the country they serve.

      • It was a general quibble about the mistaken rant about putting politics above the lives of troops being wrong more than a specific defense of Afghanistan.

This of course, disregards the fact that Israel fought a bloody war without any external assistance to secure its own territory proper, unlike, South Korea, for example. Back in the day, no-one could have imagined that territories that were won in a defensive war needed to be returned.

For that matter remember that the USSR raced with the US to recognize the nation of Israel. I've forgotten who won.
Yes, everyone raced to recognize the nation of Israel... this is why it had so many allies in the war of independence.

The entire world diplomatic community worked together to sweep the Palestinian probem under the Jordanian and Egyptian rug.
By establishing UNRWA, and perpetuating the problem to this very day.

For that matter remember that some of the nations which were on the surface most hostile to Israel eagerly took the "gifts" of the West Bank and Gaza.
they would have eagerly taken the "gift" of the Mediterranean cost, Galilee and the Negev as well, and in fact tried to, before being fought off.

Great Britain and France were chummy enough with you to co-ordinate the 1956 war.
France was the only exception, and Great Britain certainly was not chummy with Israel, esp. in 48', with them providing commanding structure, training, etc. to Jordan.

The US was chummy enough with you to hush up the Liberty incident.
The Liberty accident was 25 years after our independence, and to this day, no motive has been established as to why was this an Israeli intended action. What is established is that the Israeli Airforce was not experienced at attacking naval targets.

I honestly don't know if we'd do that even for our "special relationship" with the British. You've gotten away with a lot more than most other countries would have.
The British and the Canadians have been letting you "get away" with that multiple times in friendly fire incidents.

Again, these arguments are general emotion-based.

You don't like Israel, because you don't accept Israel's policy in the middle east? You think that the Israeli government policy harms the US interests? just plain "immoral"? Some of you you are butthurt that some of your ancestors lost the war to the Israelis ancestors? And therefore, you don't want the US government to support it? Go ahead, say it. No need to drag yourself into "what if"s and the Liberty accident idiocy.

I don't understand the connection between D-Day and the atomic bomb.

It was a necessary step to winning the war. I'd say getting the war to a conclusion was most definitely in the US interest.

Do you have a point with this?

                      • We stormed the beaches of Normandy out of a moral imperative just like we support Israel out of a moral imperative. The reasoning is one and the same.

                        • ****. You could have stayed home and sent nasty letters to Hitler if moral posturing was all D-Day was about.

You took the beaches to help end the war.

You may have declared war for moral reasons (a different debate).

We declared war because of the Japanese attack on us.

                            • I would argue we didn't declare war for moral reasons, given that Germany declared war on us and we only declared war on Japan after they attacked us and sunk our battleships. Of course, the US did provoke Germany and Japan and you could argue that that was done for moral reasons.
