If you stuff it full of SAMs it ain't a carrier anymore. It'd probably be worse at that than as a carrier.

If you stuff if full of SAMs it's called a "surface combatant" and Russia already has some really big and powerful ones (plus a fairly substantial smattering of not so powerful ones). With the new MiG-29Ks coming along for Kuznetsov she should be a fairly effective vessel for maintaining air cover over a large swathe of ocean.
