The difference is the South Korean government isn't shooting protesters and being condemned by the international community.

The Russians sent troops there to deter NATO and the Arab League from staging a Libya? Possible, but the Russian base would already provide that deterence, would it not?

The non-difference is that Syria has enemies looking to pick a fight, the legitimacy of that notwithstanding.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

A good point, but the base AFAIK isn't going to be in the path of most routes of attack. Troops, OTOH, can be positioned in any strategically awkward location the Russians choose.

            You sure about that?

I am highly sceptical that the Russians would do something like that, but perhaps you are right. This is Putin.

The flip side is that unlike crazy men in caves, Russia really doesn't want us as an enemy, while the cave people happily throw away their lives.

Russia is afraid of the precedent that would be set if the international community involves itself in another country's internal problems. They want the right to kill their own people.

I bet that the children of those killed by a regime supported by USA doesn't care much if was last year or 32 years ago. If it was 100 years, noone would probably care that much.
