Not to mention a Canadian should be the last person saying that, given the level of interdependence of our economies.

Let me get this straight, I point out wasting a decade of our time and hundreds of billions of dollars has been a total failure, that wasting additional time and resources would be just that a waste, and your response... It's causal racism? Are you saying spending additional time there would change the out come? That they're not backwards dickheads? That living in medieval living conditions is not primative? Or that Afghans are not gun welding, rioting, barbarians? The whole country is a monument to failure, we can't help them despite themselves, they're going to keep on blowing themselves up, and if you feel so strongly about it why don't you go to your nearest Army recruiting office?

Or I suppose you could alternatively join a NGO but then you might get captured and have your head cut off. Remember, they're not barbarians so just smile for the camera before Saddam chops.

Labeling an entire group of people as "gun welding [sic?], rioting, barbarians" is pretty much the definition of racism, yes.

The greatest tragedy of all is the history of Afghanistan is one of an ancient civilization, almost always the most advanced of each era, while Oerdin's Scottish ancestors were running around naked with woad on their faces and hitting each other over the head with axes.

White supremacist Northern Europeans ought to be reminded how pathetic they were for most of human history.

Yet amazingly the common people would have had roughly the same (****ty) quality of life in either society at the time. So why should anyone care?

Technically, wouldn't it be discrimination based on national origin instead of race, assuming it is discrimination? Secondly, gun ownership in Afghanistan is pretty much universal so, yes, they are gun wielding as a matter of fact so I call that an accurate description though I admit calling them barbarians is a value judgement. One which I also believe is factually correct given the history of the place & the attitudes of its people.

They were more the beneficiaries of Turkic, Mesopotamian and Indus civilizations... I dont think they led the way in anything other than drugs and colorful stones.

But its a phony country drawn up by the damn Brits who were constantly trying to play the natives off against each other while they looted resources

Balkh was one of the oldest cities in the world. Already ancient by the 7th century, it was called Umm Al-Belaad (Mother of Cities) by the Arabs, and was the birthplace of the Zoroastrian prophet, Zarathustra. The history and civilization of Afghanistan is rich. Was it influenced by other civilizations? Sure but everywhere on earth was influenced by elsewhere.

If I recall correctly the first state in Afghanistan was actually Greek.

Well we're supposed to be rebuilding the country but 90% of that cost is providing security so that the locals don't just blow it up again.

                                as low as 90%!

seriously though, the whole thing has been an unmitigated disaster. we need to leave afghanistan, now.
