Personally, I am sick of the whole Afghan experience. We are probably doing more for the Taliban by staying there now than if we left.
The problem with fanatics is that you can never "teach them a lesson". Have we accomplished anything that would tell us that another 9/11 type attack could not be launched by someone that the Afghans are harbouring in the mountains?"I am sick and tired of people who say that if you debate and you disagree with this administration somehow you're not patriotic. We should stand up and say we are Americans and we have a right to debate and disagree with any administration." - Hillary Clinton, 2003

I think we've succesfully defeated the branch of Al Qaeda that was in Afghanistan, and the Taliban never cared that much about us before we invaded, and I suspect they would cease caring about us if we left. The purpose was to get them to stop harboring Bin Laden. That succeeded, now we can leave. Al Qaeda has moved on to greener pastures in Yemen, Somalia and (as I recall) Sudan. If there is no sound in space, how come you can hear the lasers?

A friend who worked over there for the Norwegian army said that one of the biggest problems is simply that the Allies, especially the US completely ignore local customs and traditions and as a result cause constant offense and hurt to the locals without even realizing. It's a culture built around pride, and often the aggression that the locals show in various situations is nothing more than an act. One man screams and shouts in response to something like a traffic accident, then the other responds in kind, and then they quietly sort it out once everyone has seen them both stand up for their honour. If the response to the shouting is an allied soldier sticking a gun in their face then that man has to choose between backing down and being dishonoured or getting shot. It is not a culture where dishonour is something that is easily lived with.
How many countries do the US have to invade and **** up before they start teaching their troops about foreign cultures and hearts and minds campaigns? It adds up to thousands of American lives needlessly lost, not to mention hundreds of thousands of innocent civilian lives. Bear in mind these are just people living their lives and suddenly having their worlds turned upside down by an invading foreign power.

The U.S. Armed forces are designed for one thing...Offensive combat. They are incredibly awesome at that...beyond that...well...."I am sick and tired of people who say that if you debate and you disagree with this administration somehow you're not patriotic. Bringing democracy to an area that doesn't want it was always going to be fraught with peril.I make no bones about my moral support for [terrorist] organizations. - chegitz guevara
For those who aspire to live in a high cost, high tax, big government place, our nation and the world offers plenty of options. Vermont, Canada and Venezuela all offer you the opportunity to live in the socialist, big government paradise you long for. –Senator Rubio
