  • It's a measure of the ****ed up moral priorities of some, I guess.

A church has to see its money used to fund contraception for certain employees of its non-church related arms? HORROR!

A taxpayer has to see his money used to fund a war that's going to kill tens of thousands of people which he opposes on deeply-felt moral grounds? Suck it up, too bad.

Of course, that's ignoring the very utilitarian fact that increased access to birth control = fewer unwanted pregnancies = fewer abortions. I thought that would be a bigger priority.

But then again, most opposition to abortion is more about controlling women's bodies than actually caring about the ultimate fate of the fetus. Hmm, just like objecting to birth control...

Since when was the USCCB a "progressive" group?

Kaine and Casey are both waging Senate election bids this year, as I'm sure you're aware. But I'm sure you're also aware that citing 3 Democrats opposing it while the overwhelming opposition is coming from--guess who?--Boehner & Co. doesn't really make a point.

I'll direct you back to the earlier post of mine in which noted how 60% of Catholics said they supported the contraception requirement, which puts the lie to your implication Obama is "picking a fight" with people who voted for him in 2008. Besides, I sincerely doubt the decision was made to "pick a fight" with anyone. It was made in the best interests of people's health, period.

      • Boris has no need for birth control, he just wants to control other people and force their obedience. Apparently the free exercise of religion isn't in his copy of the Bill of Rights.
        John Brown did nothing wrong.

        • If anyone's picking a fight over this for political purposes, it's the opponents. This has essentially been the law of the land since the year 2000.

The right has freaked out over an Obama administration rule requiring employers to offer birth control to their employees. Most companies already had to do that.

          • Well, gay marriage isn't in mine, and in fact, it isn't in anyone's. But I bet Boris thinks that it's constitutionally mandated, since the constitution really says whatever is politically convenient and considered moral right at this moment.

Now that's a laughably bad argument, considering that could apply to pretty much any and every government law and regulation. Apparently the 14th amendment is "controlling other people and forcing their obedience," right?

Should a Mormon-run hospital be able to refuse employment/service to black people?

And it's particularly ironic that someone here makes this kind of dumb argument, considering we're a bunch of dudes arguing about something that is overwhelmingly a women's health issue and one that most women find completely uncontroversial. I wonder if somewhere there's a group of women arguing about being forced to pay for men's prostate exams.

Equal protection don't mean much to you either, eh? Good to know!

Of course, I've not once mentioned anything being constitutionally-mandated in this argument, so that's just a stupid straw man. Not to mention the obvious fact that there's a difference between something being constitutionally-mandated and something being constitutional...

                • Shouldn't rich white land owners be able to have sex with whoever (or whatever) they want? Remember, black slaves were not 'people' when Jefferson and Franklin were having sex with them. The Repugs want to go back to what the 'founding Fathers' had in mind, after all.

                  • By the way, HC, I'm never taking you seriously again when you profess your opposition to abortion. Here is one of the most practical methods available to reducing--dramatically--the number of abortions. From a purely utilitarian perspective for (Non-Catholic) abortion opponents, this should be seen as a huge victory.

How did you find out about our sinister plan? We were going to gain absolute control over the world's vaj supply, drive the price up, and live like kings! KINGS, I tell you!

                      • You're an idiot, Boris. For starters, if you can't afford to buy condoms, you can't afford an abortion. Oh, unless you make catholic employers cover that, too.

For ****'s sake, I don't even have an opposition to contraception--I think the Catholic church's opposition to condoms is ****ing stupid. My mom's a catholic and I know she doesn't agree with the church. Most catholics don't. Still, they shouldn't be forced to go against their religion!

Then there's the fact that it's ludicrous to have the government mandating this **** on people's healthcare plans. Why not let people decide for themselves what's on their plan? Why the **** is government doing this? Oh right! This is the whole paternalistic POINT of obamacare! Lovely!

                        • Being against abortion is never about not terminating fetuses. It's about controlling women's sex lives.

                          • Anyway, what this comes down to is individual rights vs church/employer/organization rights. Frankly, I'm surprised to see the Libertarians against this.

Indeed. It's certainly not because we're opposed to murdering children. I eat babies for breakfast. Really, it's because I hate women and want them to suffer.
