You would have a much easier time understanding what they're talking about if you stopped assuming that the way people in Australia use words is somehow supposed to conform to your definitions of words.

      Here you go, ****:
The American term sneakers is a synonym for athletic shoes. More specifically, sneakers refer to footwear made of flexible material, typically featuring a sole made of rubber and an upper part made of leather or canvas. Sneakers were originally sporting apparel, but are today worn much more widely as casual footwear. They are now widely popular. Many children choose to wear sneakers to school because of their comfort and versatility.

Sneaker can also refer to an athletic shoe such as basketball shoes, tennis shoes or cross trainers. These shoes are sport specific shoes worn for various sports.

The British English equivalent of "sneaker" is "trainer" in its modern meaning; however, the traditional "sneaker" (pictured) is closer to the British "plimsoll". In some urban areas in the United States, the slang for sneakers is kicks. In Hiberno-English and Australian English the term is runners. In South African English the term used is tekkies.

By runners I meant running shoes.

Where I came from the word "sand shoes" was usually used as a generic terms for the canvas sports shoes.

A little extra help for an extra special poster:
Athletic shoe is a generic name for the footwear primarily designed for sports or other forms of physical exercise but in recent years has come to be used for casual everyday activities.

They are also known as trainers (British English), daps (Welsh English), sandshoes, gym boots or joggers (Australian English), running shoes, runners or gutties (Canadian English, Australian English, Hiberno-English), sneakers (American English), tennis shoes (British English, Australian English), gym shoes, tennies, sports shoes, sneaks, tackies[1] (South African English and Hiberno-English), rubber shoes (Philippine English) or canvers (Nigerian English).

Maybe in the ****hole where you live. Australians might mean something else by "running shoes". This shouldn't be hard to grasp.

I referred to all as "runners". I have no idea what the difference between running shoes and trainers might be. And I don't care. I guess your term "athletic shoes" is what I mean by "runners".

                    Let's see...

2 pairs Tmberland Pro Titan titanium-toed work boots
2 old pairs Tmberland Pro Titan titanium-toed work boots
1 old pair Craftsman plastic-toed work boots
1 pair Wolverine steel-toed work boots
1 pair Caterpillar steel-toed work boots
1 old pair Flosheim steel-toed work boots
1 pair Carolina Comfort steel-toed casual shoes
1 pair Hush Puppies steel-toed casual shoes
                    2 pairs steel-toed "boat shoes"
1 pair Florsheim steel-toed loafers (its like wearing your slippers to work!)
                    2 pairs steel-toed sneakers
An old comfy pair of New balance sneakers.

The Timberlands were $125-150, one pair of steel-toed sneakers were $30, everything else was right around $100.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.
