Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul is doing well in the polls these days, but it's talk of potential third-party bid that really worries the GOP establi

It's all gossip right now but the media is flush with speculation that Paul will run 3rd party again once he inevitably loses the Republican nomination. That report was just published 40 minutes ago so such speculation is all the rage right now in the media.

He's polling at 27.5% in Iowa, so 10% isn't quite the barrier you imagine it to be. There's a segment of the GOP that will never support Paul because he's insane. But there's also a segment that will never support Romney because he's Mormon. And some who will never support Gingrich because he's the epitome of sleaze. They are all irrelevant in the end. The greatest number of people are undecided.

Wait, you admit your candidate of choice is insane?

          Oh wow... Iowa.

          Yes, that was incredibly sarcastic.

Yeah, why? You think I'm opposed to insanity?

A CBS poll proves that your magical barrier theory is bogus in a key early state. I guess sarcasm is all you have left.

Because it's not a real race. It's a book selling tour, and you'e paying for it.

So very key... which is why Mike Huckabee became the Republican nominee in 2008. And why candidates have been more and more deciding the skip it.

Why do you think that singular examples somehow prove your point? Oh my God, Howard Dean! Holy ****, Mike Huckabee! None of these anecdotes prove that Ron Paul isn't a serious candidate. They just show what a lazy thinker you are. As if the circumstances today are a perfect match for the circumstances in those elections.

Besides, nobody is skipping Iowa. According to this AP story, Romney allies are spending about a million more in Iowa than Ron Paul is. Romney's strategy in Iowa is to manage expectations, and hope that New England will be friendlier turf. His strategy is sound, and it's exactly what I would go for if I were an opportunistic jackass running for President. It is not a surefire path to victory though. Significant chunks of the GOP do not trust Mitt Romney.

Enthusiastic support matters. Momentum coming out of Iowa matters. Acting like these are irrelevant might be trendy and hip among smug urban lefties, but it only shows how shallow your understanding really is.

                    • It's not that Ron Paul isn't a serious candidate because he can't win Iowa. He isn't a serious candidate because he's so far out there that he could not win. Maybe he can win in Iowa, but he can't win in other important states like Florida. Honestly, Iowa is not a predictor anymore. Sure, he might get some "momentum", but if Mike Huckabee (who is WAY more mainstream and popular and electable than Ron Paul) can grab Iowa and not get anywhere else, what can we hope for Ron Paul?

                      • Ron Paul isn't from the Midwest, and he isn't an ethanol baron. Why do you think that he can win in Iowa, but not the South? Do Southerners hate guns and love big government?

No, but they probably love Israel and want to bomb Iran.
