The Democrats were mad to run for office and govern like incrementalists. I usually like tinkerers. I'm not a radical kinda guy. But the Dems were staring into the abyss saying "eh, a few nudges at the margin and it'll be ok." Various ideas were unthinkable, right from the get-go. "Change our lobbyists and bundlers can accept" might as well have been their slogan.
A lot depends on whether or not Europe goes kablooey, triggering a double-dip.
There could be some positives to come out of it. If Europe goes kablooey, President Obama might accept that he has no chance of being reeelected in 2012 and might actually try governing for the remainder of his term instead of campaigning. This is America's best chance to get a debt deal before Mitt Romney takes office.
Old story (we're now 15 trillion in debt) but it gets the point across:
National debt has increased $4 trillion under Obama
...
The national debt increased $4.9 trillion during the eight-year presidency of George W. Bush. The debt now is rising at a pace to surpass that amount during Mr. Obama's four-year term.

For those who aspire to live in a high cost, high tax, big government place, our nation and the world offers plenty of options. Vermont, Canada and Venezuela all offer you the opportunity to live in the socialist, big government paradise you long for. –Senator Rubio
It really isn't important who created the debt crisis, what is important is that Obama is thoroughly unwilling to do anything about it. He can't (and won't) get rid of his horrible healthcare law, he refuses point-blank to make any meaningful changes in medicare and medicaid, and fights tooth and nail against even the most paltry of spending cuts. The only thing he's willing to look at is defense, and regardless of how much that should be cut, it isn't even close to enough.
I don't care how we got here, I only care how we get out of it.

The Dems have been seeking a "grand bargain" for some time, but since the GOP knows they can simply hold out for more, and more, and more... there has been no bargain yet. The Dems compromise, then compromise again, whine some, compromise again, whine some more...
The GOP has this figured out. They'll hold out as long as they can, and end up with 9/10 of what they want. It's been working that way for a while now. Their constituents want them to behave this way (see poll data where Republicans want them to stick to their guns, whereas Democrats want their representatives to compromise).

The Super Committee negotiations have shown this to be complete bull****. Toomey offered the Dems $400 billion in increased revenue and they didn't take it.
