I'd heard of Ronaldo, he's about as famous in the USA as Connie Britton. Much less famous than Courtney Love.

I'm European and I've never heard of Connie Britton.

I know who Tom Brady is and a few other random NFL and NBA players. The only baseball players I can name are Joe DiMaggio and Babe Ruth, and then only because they are referenced in American sitcoms. George Steinbrenner was never a player was he? I know him from Seinfeld.

Connie Britton was the mom on Friday Night Lights. I imagine most Americans wouldn't know who she is.

The only American footballers I know are Tim Tebow and Aaron Rodgers... while Rodgers could be Messi (in a few years)...the equivalent of Tebow does not exist in European football...

How did Tebow get so famous overseas? He's only played a few professional games!

Tim Tebow is known internationally because he pretty much embodies the creepiness of the American stereotype.

                    • What is so creepy about him? So he's a Christian and he is against abortion, is that really a big deal?

                      • No. But praying before a game, during a game, and after a game, while commercials starring him air during a game where he espouses his Christian views. It's absurd, and definitely creepy. It's cultlike.

Did I mention he wrote biblical versus under his eyes during games?

                        • So he thinks God will decide to make his team win. I'm sure some football fans pray about football too, so what?

                          • Some people wear a football jersey when they watch the game and refuse to wash it until the season ends. Are they all creepy and cultlike?

Do you know anything about the guy?

He isn't some ho-hum run-of-the-mill Christian. He's a cultlike extremist with absurd practices. He's also actively trying, at all times, to shove his religion down everyone else's throat.

As I said, he's famous because the rest of the world recognizes how creepy it is. If Americans don't find it creepy, then that just further serves my point.

That depends. Do they take their jersey with them everywhere they go, stopping in the middle of what they're doing to kneel and pray to it?
Do they draw pictures of the jersey under their eyes when they go out of the house?

Again, if you don't think he's creepy, you need to adjust your standards. Americans are apparently used to hardcore Christians who blindly follow doctrine showing zero capacity for original or critical thought. It's creepy to the rest of us.
