Fairfax County median come (according to the latest US census) is $102,325 (as of 2010), per capita is $48,140.
Calgary's median is $91,570 (as of 2008, source is Statistics Canada), per capita is $54,364.

The cost of living in Fairfax County (and even San Diego) is far higher than Calgary as well. Which more than offsets the numbers. Further, the only reason household is higher is because more people are in the household. Per capita is noticeably lower. Also note that the Canadian currency is more valuable than US currency.
If the cost of living is too high, you can live in Loudoun or Prince William. Loudoun actually has a higher median than Fairfax.

Oh, and 5 Guys is great stuff . Cajun fries, FTW!
You have no idea why hipsters drink PBR.

Sounds like a pretty ****ty city, actually...
You are simply wrong. The U.S. Department of Commerce lumps San Diego, Carlesbad, and San Marcos (all very affluent coastal areas) together as one metro so that's why your numbers don't add up but the US Department of Commerce's numbers do add up. Just give up the ghost already; you were wrong now be man enough to admit it.

Hipsters do drink PBR partially because it is cheap but it was also kind of a counter culture sort of thing. PBR was independent and not one of the large multinationals, it had a long history, and since PBR didn't have the advertising budget the big guys did their marketing team actually went into individual bars & restaurants giving out free stuff (key chains, bottle openers, hats & t-shirts) with PBR logos on them so they actually became kind of a cool "you can't buy this hat in stores" sort of brand. It was all based on word of mouth and so the hipsters could tell themselves they were hip, that they were rooting for the little guy, and most of all that they were in on a special word of mouth thing that you had to know somebody to know about. It was a classic bit of guerrilla marketing fought with key chain bottle openers and cheap baseball caps.

Oerdin, you truly are a monumental idiot.

You're completely wrong here. Every single primary source says so.

35 is in "buy a convertible and quit my job" territory.

My favourite part about your source, Oerdin, is it cites itself. If you follow the "Source" links, it brings you back to the original document.

Not at all. The cost of living in NoVA is higher because people actually want to live there. No one would willingly live in a crappy backwater town like Calgary if not for the oil.

"Not at all", yet you then admit it is higher.

It's higher because people are stupid. There's no other explanation.

You have to be stupid to piss your money away in Fairfax County. What do you get out of it? Lower per capita incomes, higher expenses, no hockey team, no real ski hills, dirty air and water, and citizens like you and HC?

                        Sign me up.

                        • Whoah there, the Washington Capitals are actually pretty good. And there are some decent ski hills in West Virginia and Pennsylvania, plus Massanutten in Virginia proper. And the water and air are perfectly clean in Fairfax County, since it's a suburb. You're completely wrong.

"Not at all" refers to the offset, of course; in NoVA you are getting actual value for your money while in Calgary there's nothing to do but save up cash for when you move somewhere civilized.

You obviously have no idea what a ski hill is, or what a good hockey team is. How can a good hockey team exist for 37 years and never win a Stanley Cup?

And if you think the water in Fairfax county is comparable to glacial runoffs, you're retarded. You just don't have anything to compare it to.

You certainly do not get actual value for your money in Fairfax County. There's no particular value to that land at all. None. You're paying a lot of money for land that is only important because some businesses set up shop there, but mostly because the government (eg, the American people) pay a huge portion of your residents.

The good people of Calgary would riot if as many people worked on the public dollar as people in your county do. You ****ing Communists.

As for people wanting to live there -- compare the growth rates of Fairfax County and Calgary. Not even close. And I was right, in 2011 Calgary passed Fairfax county in population (1,090,936).
