Boehner's probably the best speaker you could ask for right now. So yeah, it'd be bad. Even if you don't like him, try to imagine somebody you'd rather have running the House.

          • If this holds true, the deal is close.

Cantor's rumored to be the one scuttling lots of the deals. But yeah, I like him too.

It's called negotiation. If the hill piece holds true, the hard line "bad cop" role seems to have rolled up Harry. Course he always was a putz.

No way. That's the second worst out come possible because it just keeps this whole default threat going thus unsettling markets. Republicans need to stop being treasonous and do their constitutional duty to honor the country's debts as they've done over 100 times since the 1960's, seven times just under Bush jr.

                  • Having more time to cut the deficit is a good thing, and a long term debt deal will remove any incentive the president has to make one.

                    • Good. Threatening default is NOT supposed to be part of the budgetary process and instead the budget is supposed to go through normal Congressional processes. Debate the budget during the regular yearly budget debates which occur when Congress passes the budget; that way the market doesn't get jittery (and the economy tank) because some retarded politician wants to posture for his most extreme base.

Not if I have something to say about it. You belong here.

Does anybody have a reasonable guess what will happen if these jackasses actually let us default? Are we talking recession-gets-a-little-worse bad or former-millionaires-hunt-pigeons-for-food bad? Somewhere in between? Just a rough estimate would be fine.
There's an article on Slate that tends more towards the former, without entirely ruling out the later. Under any definition, it would be doubleplus ungood.

On a related note, I assume it would be construed as a threat if I were to tell my senator, "if you allow this debacle, we will break into your mansion in a mob at midnight, drag you out of your bed into the streets, and beat you to death in front of your family and/or the secretary you're boning at present." That would be considered a threat, no? I don't think that's fair, as it would really be more of a predictive warning. Is there some special way I could phrase it to get around the law?

                        Thanks.
I'm gonna defer to Imran and the rest of the Polytubbie legal squad on this question, but I like the cut of your jib.

I didn't say that it was; obviously, Boehner has a different opinion.
