Math people just think functionally, which tends not to lend itself well to software design.

Therefore computer science is not art, because there are empirical measures to determine that some algorithms/designs/etc are better than others (memory consumption, processor use, refactoring time, number of bugs, etc).

Oh no! This is so not true.

When we have our morning scrums, each developer takes a turn telling the others how we feel about the code we are writing. Sometimes people get very passionate and describe the emotionality of the code to such a degree that we all need to take the morning off.

When we have our status updates, we draw paintings to represent if we feel the project is on track for its milestones.

There's just two ways asher. There's the mathy way and the artistic way.

I happen to agree with you but what you are doing is less engineering and more architecture.

Then why is asher arguing that form is important? If it were just about the maths, then he'd be saying that, but he's not.

So why do you 'write' code instead of 'inputting' code? You've said so yourself that creativity is an important part of your job.

                • Ben, you say art isn't empirical, and logic is?

Ben, the product sells itself. ****, in many school districts (typically under-funded US ones), the PTA gets together to raise money to buy the damn boards themselves. I don't need to sell it to you, you're not even a teacher.
Dude, smartboards suck. I don't know what you're talking about. We have them all over the place at TJ and I have not once used one and said "you know, this is something that is actually worth spending any amount of money on."

                      Fixed.

Whether people at TJ are smart enough to use them properly is inconsequential.

                      • We have them in almost every classroom. The software is terrible, the lack of multitouch and the fact that they use projectors makes them pretty much useless. Teachers just use them as expensive projector screens because honestly overheads are easier and more convenient. The only time any of my teachers EVER use the touch functionality is to move to the next slide on powerpoints. We've tried the markers--they are just awful. Laggy, glitchy and just bad.

They've been in FCPS since I was in 5th grade and every single one of my teachers has used one and hated it.

                        • The fact that you have obsolete smartboards sounds like a TJ problem.

                          Are they Promethean boards?

FWIW, our boards are multi-touch. You can get projector models, LCD models, or Plasma models. The projector models are by far the most popular. I'm willing to bet your school cheaped out and didn't get the good, short-throw projectors...

The boards are so awful that the US military is the single largest customer, and there are multiple boards in the Whitehouse briefing rooms and used by the JCS regularly. They even use ruggedized versions in Iraq and Afghanistan for mission briefings and debriefings.

                          • The ones we have suck. I will concede that they are probably old versions and the new versions could be substantially less ****ty.

They aren't rear-projector by the way. We're talking computer projector, so when you're writing on the board you are covering up the picture with your shadow. I hate it.

Ben applying a logical fallacy? Color me shocked.

I suspect that steelworkers, plumbers, taxi drivers, CPU manufacturers, lawyers, etc. would be surprised to learn that they're artists

If you got it from my company and not one of our competitors, that means your school cheaped out.

Shadows aren't a problem on the real boards. That's the projector at the top of the board, about extending about a foot out.
