If other people want to make low-hanging fruit out of themselves by using "password" as their password (or other nonsense) then so much the better for me. (Unless they allow their computer to turn into a spam zombie - then they deserve a beating.)

Interesting. Plain whiteboards are ok, can't say I'm fond of them though. Chalk is better and easier to use.

Teachers have demanded a "chalk" and "crayon" like ink on the smartboards. I need to design something and get the folks in India to start coding one up one of these days...

And yet your "disruptive" technology reduces password complexity in certain already-insecure circumstances by ~8.5 bits = ~1.5 characters OH NOES. I can add a couple letters to the end and I've already come out ahead.

Something that grows exponentially is inherently resistant to disruptive technology. Your article was citing huge decreases in running time as significant, when the only relevant number is the log of the ratio.

Moreover, you keep posting these idiotic "GPUs are taking over everything!!!!" articles and it's ****ing annoying. They are tech "journalism's" equivalent of twitter/facebook hype.

Except that's not true at all. The huge decreases in run time is significant, because now those 150M passwords stolen from a site can all be used pretty readily whereas before that'd be cost and technologically prohibitive. The scale differential is immense.

I am not at all interested in your opinions on this matter, because they're no more useful or insightful than Ben's contributions to this thread.

You dismiss the progress of GPU computation outright because you either cannot comprehend the present applications, cannot envision future applications, or genuinely have no appreciation for just how much faster those computations can be. They've fundamentally changed how supercomputers are even architected in recent years. It is a big deal, whether you're capable of understanding that or not.

Soon GPUs will be treated like FPUs are, as extension of the core CPU. I'm not even sure if you're old enough to remember the discrete FPU days.

If you don't like it, don't read it.

I work in the industry and I'm seeing the change and capability GPUs unlock. You make ****ing spreadsheets. Know your role at the bottom of the totem pole, embrace it, and shut the **** up.

My computer contains a series of dummy passwords that if entered, deletes the hard drive, delivers a fatal shock to the user, and then releases an EMP that will wipe out all electronics in half a mile radius. I feel secure.

                      That's a very Russian design.

I don't have anything on my computer worth hacking. Even my NAS has nothing overly private. Terabytes of porn and movies/TV shows and music. I'd make it public if I could, as a public service.

I've worked on computers that have discrete FPUs, I'm sure Kuci remembers them perfectly well...

Also, Kuci's repeatedly pwned you in every substantive discussion of actual computer science I've observed. You're more familiar with the current tech trends, but it's like an auto mechanic versus an engineer.

Look, you guys work in slightly different fields. It's not that either of you are on the bottom or top of the totem poles. You are on DIFFERENT totem poles.

I've got an encrypted partition for my browser, email, and tax returns. It's not worth the performance hit to encrypt anything else - if somebody steals my laptop then I'd only be mildly inconveniencing them if I had the system partition encrypted ("oh no now we'll have to install a pirated copy of Windows ")

Also, re:GPUs changing everything, afaik the vector cores in our old Cray SV1 are similar in many ways to GPU architecture. GPUs have an economy of scale that supercomputer architectures lack, hence, I suspect, the price drop in such capability.

                              Not true at all.

Kuci is very strong at math and math theory. I've not seen ANY indication at all that he's strong at computer science. He certainly doesn't make a case for being strong in CS in this thread. His usual contributions in CS/SENG threads are to just ask questions.

No, actuaries are demonstrably at the bottom. They contribute nothing of worth to society at large. They are creatures devoid of personality who crunch numbers for insurance companies. It's not an honorable profession, nor is it very interesting.

Kuci likely became an actuary because he can't hack it as a developer. Most people very good at math tend to be awful software developers, and I don't see why Kuci is an exception to that rule.

Both of these are totally absurd. This reminds me of how Che was saying that he doesn't look up to KH anymore since he thinks quants are parasitic scum.
