  • WTF? Are you claiming that without marriage licenses, the government would recognize anyone's marriage? Then why the hell couldn't the government let people bring their spouse into the country without marriage licenses?

    • Obviously your statement, "how about getting the government out of marriage", is completely rubbish. Good. Glad that's been dealt with.

That isn't even what I said. Did your mother smoke crack when she was carrying you or something? If someone wants to bring their spouse into the country why would I want to stop them? Why do you think stopping that qualifies as "government non-interference"?

Unfortunately, letting adults make their own decisions has consequences. This is one of them.

          • No one is forced to get a marriage license. Allowing gays to get one qualifies as "letting adults make their own decisions" far more than not letting them get one. I don't see how removing the option of bringing your spouse into the country is supposed to make adults more able to make their own decisions. God, you're stupid.

because the people persecuting Mormons back then didn't believe in religious freedom or the Constitution

Then be honest and say you want government intervention to benefit causes you support.

It's government intervention, which again, is something that you support provided it works for you. It's a crap argument.

Get the government out of your life if they do something you don't like, and get the government in so they can support you.

Do you support the repeal of the English common law?

Should adults be allowed to make their own decisions?

I guess children should decide everything for adults. I can't actually decide whether children should decide this because I am an adult and I therefore shouldn't decide things. I can't decide whether I should ask a child to decide because I need a child to decide whether I should ask a child to decide. But the child can't decide something I haven't asked. I can't ask the cat to decide because the cat doesn't speak English and I don't speak meoww.

I'm sure that all made sense.

Wut? I don't think the government should stop people from bringing their spouse into the country, and somehow you think I'm contradicting myself?

I'm not interested in some kind of cause, I just don't see why the government should pick and choose which marriages to recognize based on the prejudices of some religious freaks. If you don't want your marriage recognized by the government, you shouldn't be forced to have it recognized. Doesn't restrict anyone's freedom.

But you want them to intervene to support your definition and prejudices. Don't you see this? Stands to reason that if you hate it when people who disagree with you have the power to make decisions that reflect their personal opinions, that you would choose not to do the same.

Except this is why you are demanding. Government intervention when you agree with it, and no government intervention when you disagree with it. Unfortunately, that's not the way it works.

regardless, marriage aint in the Constitution so Congress lacks the authority to be involved

Not really, I don't want to ban any consenting adults from getting their marriages recognized unless they're closely related like siblings. I'm not trying to enforce prejudices on anyone, unless you think being against a really high risk of birth defects is a prejudice.

                            • I'm not married to it
The problem is that the system is far superior to the alternatives. So I'm very reluctant to weaken part of it, because it just doesn't work that way.

Some things are older than the constitution. Habeaus Corpus, etc. Marriage by the English Common law is one of these, and is a part of the law of the land. Congress derives their authority on this question from the Common Law not the Constitution. Also why their authority extends to the preservation of the law, and not to it's repeal or amendment. It can't really be changed because it would be like Congress repealing itself.

I don't believe that it's a prejudice per se, but arguing that the state derives a benefit from marriage and has the authority to regulate marriage in this fashion doesn't help your case.
