  • What's wrong with indulgences?

I always wondered what's wrong with a free market providing psychological services.

You are worried about afterlife; a specialist will offer you an answer, for a negociable price. Most certainly you can visit priests from nearby parishes to get better offers.

On the upside, indulgences explicitly mentioned as far as the terrestrial Church can understand the ways of God, so it's not like you can blame them for usurping someone else's identity.

Why did Luther hate freedom so much?

The traditional answer would be "it's fraud".

Indulgences are fine, but the sale of indulgences is simony.

There is no biblical basis for indulgences. Mind you there isn't a biblical basis for anything in Catholicism is there?

So Luther was the first one to write the bible?

That depends on what you mean by "write the bible"

If you mean that he wrote the any of the Greek Scriptures, or Hebrew Scriptures. Then the answer is of course no.

If you mean was he was the first to write about the bible then no too, many other theologians existed before him.

If you mean he was the first to translate the bible into a non Latin form, then the answer would again be no.

If you however mean that he was the first to write the bible in a non Latin form that received mass publication and dissemination among the average people then yes he did accomplish that.

So you concede that he didn't write the bible. Thank you.

So who wrote them, if it wasn't Luther?

For sure. Can you name some of those theologians?

If you mean he was the first to translate the bible into a non Latin form, then the answer would again be no.
Non-Latin form. You just said that scripture was in hebrew and in Greek. So who translated the scripture into Latin, and why is the Latin version important to Luther?

If you however mean that he was the first to write the bible in a non Latin form that received mass publication and dissemination among the average people then yes he did accomplish that.
Was he the first to widely distribute the bible?

                        1. I didn't concede ****, I never said he wrote the bible.

2.The Greek scriptures were written by The apostles: Mathew, Mark, Luke, Paul, John, Peter.
                        Jesus brothers: Jude, and James.
-the Hebrew Scriptures were written by: Moses, Joshua, Samuel, Gad, Nathan, Jeremiah, Ezra, Nehemiah, David, Solomon, Agur, Lemuel, Isaiah, Ezekiel, Daniel, Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggal, Zechariah, Malachi.
Spellings of these names may vary slightly depending on translation.

3.Ha, that's a loaded question would you like me to list all of them or perhaps just a sample of the thousands to pick from?

4.Again a loaded question. Nobody can be sure who exactly translated the bible first. You could say perhaps it was Jerome however that is highly unlikely as he lived 350?-420?. Christianity had already been Romes state religion for several decades by the time he was born. The Latin version was important as it was the main version used by the Catholic church, and the only one the Catholic church allowed at the time.

5.Depends on what you would call "widely distribute". He was the first person to make a translation of the bible that was produced on a truly impressive (industrial) scale.

There's no evidence that the Gospels were written by the apostles. Most historians and theologians don't believe the Epistles of Peter were written by Peter but are rather falsely attributed.

Says who? Luther wasn't around then. How do we know that the books that were in the bible really were written by the Apostles?

-the Hebrew Scriptures were written by: Moses, Joshua, Samuel, Gad, Nathan, Jeremiah, Ezra, Nehemiah, David, Solomon, Agur, Lemuel, Isaiah, Ezekiel, Daniel, Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggal, Zechariah, Malachi.

Really? I think you've left a few out. What about Baruch?

3.Hah that's a loaded question would you like me to list all of them or perhaps just a sample of the thousands to pick from?
Pick the ones you feel are the most significant prior to Luther.

4.Again a loaded question. Nobody can be sure who exactly translated the bible first.
I didn't ask that. I asked who translated the Hebrew and Greek Scriptures into Latin.

You could say perhaps it was Jerome however that is highly unlikely as he lived 350?-420?
So how do you know it was Jerome, and not say, someone else? Did Luther say that Jerome wrote the Vulgate? By the way, it's called a Vulgate. If you don't even know who wrote the bible, and put it together, then how can you argue that the Catholic church isn't following the bible when they wrote the darn thing.

Christianity had already been Romes state religion for several decades by the time he was born.
Christianity? You mean Catholicism? Or were there Lutherans and such around. Yes, it was written because the Emperor Theodosius commissioned them, during the reign of Pope Gelasius.

the Latin version was important as it was the main version used by the Catholic church, and the only one the Catholic church allowed at the time.
It was also the one that Luther translated from.

5.Depends on what you would call "widely distribute". He was the first person to make a translation of the bible that was produced on a truly impressive (industrial) scale.
