    Why don't you elaborate then?

If you are physically restricted to being EXTREMELY limited in where you can start shifting mass quantities of oil production, how is this liquid?

These pipeline projects take many years. Upwards of ten. Just because Nebraska needs 500,000 more barrels of oil per day from Saudi Arabia doesn't mean they can actually do that in any reasonable time.

    • Well the fact that you use pipelines to move it around should be a clue.

I was hoping you weren't making the pun. Disappointing.

        • In all seriousness, the fact is that even if canada cut off its supply of oil, 1. the US has enough domestic reserves to conquer Canada and 2. oil is in fact such a fungible, liquid and globally traded commodity that you would just change who sends oil where and add some inefficiencies to the distribution.

This is where the great disconnect occurs in this thread: between people who understand the real world of the oil markets, and people who read textbooks about economic theory and assume the oil market is a free market and governed by all of the rules-of-thumb economists only know how to use.

            • Asher, do you really think it's beyond the capabilities of the shipyards of the world to meet the demand for supertankers if the USA needed more oil? (it's not)

Asher, empirical evidence demonstrates that oil is actually traded on a market remarkably close to the ideal.

How many shipyards in the world are capable of building supertankers? How many years are they backordered?

True, fun fact: my dad actually negotiated the contract for a Big Oil Company's purchase of a fleet of supertankers to support Hibernia in the late 90s.

                  In what way?

You also should understand that oil infrastructure develops over decades. They develop based off speculation and estimates for future demand in certain areas. If there's a massive disruption of those assumptions, the physical realities of oil trading no longer align with the concept of a free market.

There are massive high-capacity pipelines going from Canada to the USA. They were built over decades. There are also many ports in the US to accept shipments of oil, but not enough to offset the loss of oil from those pipelines. Further, the infrastructure simply doesn't exist to ship all that oil from those coastal cities across the nation. The infrastructure was designed to receive oil via pipelines from Canada.

                  • Look, what you're suggesting is basically that you can increase oil prices by artificially cutting supply. Which begs the question, why don't you do that right now and get filthy rich? You've got an inherent contradiction in what you're saying.

It's not necessary to get into the fine details of oil distribution to notice the glaring logical contradictions in your statements. It's what is known as an oxymoron

To clarify, before Kuci calls me out on something, it is a good idea to speculate a bit on oil which is exactly what the US, OPEC, and lots of other people do (and you can too by buying oil futures).

This is exactly what is happening. Very overtly with OPEC, covertly with other nations.

There's nothing contradictory in my statements. It's a fact that oil supply is being artificially cut on a regular basis to maintain higher oil prices.

Alberta's increased capacity is a reality because of the Middle East's falling capacity and increased overall demand. There are limits to how high you can inflate the price before alternatives become practical. Big Oil in Alberta regularly halt work in projects and delay their power-on date to reflect their supply projections (which really means their price projections). This happens all over the world.

                          • Hell, have any of you even noticed the massive regional disparity in gasoline prices in the central US the past month?

Canada is a large country filled with manly people armed with rifles and excellent survival skills. American soldiers come from inner-city Philadelphia and fail boot camp repeatedly.

                                It'd be a slaughter of the Americans...just like 1812.
