    Iirc, grrm has said the reason is magical in nature and will be explained in the last book.

    Gendry is the one who saves Brienne in AFFC by killing Biter and was seemingly dragged with Brienne to Lady Stoneheart. Seemed like Gendry would have more to do... and perhaps he still will. After all, Davos could save him and that's the reason Gendry is in the Eastern countryside when Brienne comes looking for Sansa
