Raff doesn't strike me as a guy who's too particular about where he sticks it.

Yeah that's the funny thing, the fact that it's 10 years old probably explains why it's so good as well as why it's done.
It was supposed to be after the 5-year timeskip too; which would make more sense, becauseSpoiler:Arya would be seducing Raff as a sexy 16 year old, not a pre-pubescent 11 year old.
It's still awesome though.

Apparently this Arya chapter was written years and years ago, and was originally gonna be in book 4, then book 5, and now will be her first chapter in book 6. Maybe.

Who gives a **** about the TV show? They'll finish the story regardless of if Martin dies tomorrow.

FWIW, I've heard Martin has been reading other sample chapters at various events he's been at this year. So it appears he's got a lot of it written already.

GRRM on the reception of his new sample chapter.

Sorry about that.
The upload of the new sample chapter from THE WINDS OF WINTER created so much traffic to my website and blog that the servers crashed. This is the first time I've been able to get up myself all day.
Anyway, it seems to be easing off some. And we are looking at ways to increase capacity.
The "reviews" of the chapter have been amazingly enthusiastic as well. Thanks. I am pleased that so many of you -- thousands and maybe tens of thousands, it would seem -- enjoyed "Mercy" so much.
I mentioned that this chapter had quite a history. It's true. The first draft was written more than a decade ago. Originally, it was intended to be the opening Arya chapter after the infamous "five year gap," her first appearance in A DANCE WITH DRAGONS as initially conceived. Then it was supposed to be a part of A FEAST FOR CROWS, after I abandoned the five year gap and split the books. Then it was going to be the concluding Arya chapter in A DANCE WITH DRAGONS. But it seemed more like an opening chapter than a closing one, so shortly before ADWD was published my editor and I agreed to remove it from DANCE and shift it over into WINDS. Of course, it has been revised, tightened, polished, and tweaked at every step of the way, so the version on my website has some significant differences from the "five year gap" version.
Some of you who enjoyed meeting Mercy may not have found the other sample we've put out there of late, a new Tyrion chapter. That one is live and available with the ICE & FIRE app, and can be found at

I just hope he doesn't die before it is done. Assuming he doesn't stroke out then he'll eventually finish it though taking 20 years (so far) to finish 6/8ths of the series is pretty bad, worse, he said he was thinking about making the last book into two books and that would mean he's only 2/3rds done. I'm still mad that I'll never get to finish reading Steig Larsson's Millennium book series.Originally posted by Guynemer View PostIt's awesome. I can't wait to see the whole book.
(I'll be bald by then.)

It was actually set up rather nicely.
Spoiler:Last we saw Arya, she was being sent to the mummers to learn acting, IIRC. And last we saw Raff, he was a Lannister guardsman; no reason he couldn't be attached as a bodyguard to Harys Swyft on his expedition to the Iron Bank.
It's awesome. I can't wait to see the whole book.

The whole point is that it's
Spoiler:Richard III in Westeros, and the comedy is from the juxtaposition of the deadly seriousness of the play with **** like the death god's horn falling off and the foot-long dildo that keeps slipping out of the dwarf's fly.
The REALLY COOL parts:
Spoiler:
* In a way that does not feel contrived, Arya encounters by chance and kills one of the men in her death prayer.
* Arya is playing her sister Sansa in the play
* Raff's line:
“You’ll need to carry me.”
See? thought Mercy. You know your line, and so do I.
“Think so?” asked Arya, sweetly.(notice how the name changes to Arya)
Compare this to:
(from an Arya chapter in ACOK)One of the spearmen drifted over to Lommy. “Something wrong with your leg, boy?” “It got hurt.” “Can you walk?” He sounded concerned. “No,” said Lommy. “You got to carry me.” “Think so ?” The man lifted his spear casually and drove the point through the boy’s soft throat. Lommy never even had time to yield again. He jerked once, and that was all. When the man pulled his spear loose, blood sprayed out in a dark fountain. “Carry him, he says,” he muttered, chuckling.
Oh yeah and it has the word "rape" a total of 8 times. GRRM's at the top of his game here.

It creeped me the **** out though. It says something about GRRM that I had to get halfway through beforeSpoiler:I was absolutely sure Arya wasn't actually getting raped for realsies

Mmmmmmmmhmmm. I'm beginning to think The Bride from Kill Bill was modeled on Arya.
