  • The approaching federal government shutdown

Personally, I'm for it. It'll make my commute easier.

You don't have to worry about me, I'm considered "essential" to the contract(which is in turn considered "essential") and my company is going to keep paying me.

I'm against it because it will mean work stoppages for me.

A system of government where this is possible is laughable.

So how does it work in your country if there is no budget for the year when the allocated money runs out?

Changes to the budget need to be approved by parliament, but parliament is controlled by the people making the budget.

If parliament didn't agree the changes for some reason, we'd carry on with the same laws as before, and borrow to cover any extra shortfall.

Whenever I'm feeling bad about how I've managed my personal budget, I just think of how much worse it could be.

Given the chance though, I wouldn't mind going trillions into debt. Probably be a lot of fun.

Do republicans really think a budget shutdown is a good thing?

I thought if Parliament rejected your government's budget new elections were held, not "business continues as usual".

You do realize that the federal fiscal year started in September and we've been operating without a budget all this time, right? The question should be if Democrats are in favor of a shutdown given the fact they still haven't come up with a budget.

The budget has to start with the House, I think?

Actually I'm wrong, some taxes are annual. Like Income Tax, and are renewed in a motion after the budget, but tax continuations and changes ratified in a single motion after the budget, and then people argue about the individual proposals and pass/fail them over the next few days/weeks/months.

                            http://www.parliament.uk/documents/commons-information-office/p05.pdf

So tax raising powers are maintained, spending retained.

In practice, you wouldn't get to the point where a government proposed a budget they knew they couldn't pass.

Obama going on the news to say soldiers wouldn't be paid was a pretty cheap shot considering how long this has been going on.
