If the seat projection were based on 50% support (the PCs in '84 got 50.2, the Bloc in '93 got 49.3) I would not say it is outrageous. The number used for the projection in 38.7 so I would suggest that indeed something is being projected.

It is not impossible for the NDP to get there, since the Bloc seems to have nothing left in the tank and the Liberals and Conservatives are not growing, but the numbers are being sensationalised.

Frankly, I have no idea how the seats will go in Quebec.

There are a lot of die hard Liberals in and around Montreal, and they are concentrated in some ridings. Even when the Liberals get whipped they win those ridings.

There are a lot of conservativly minded people in and around Quebec City. They went to the Bloc when the PCs melted down nationally and then returned to the Conservatives when they became acceptable.

There are a lot of committed sovereigntists all over the province.

It is not easy to see people from any of those groups going to the NDP.

The problem with seat projections is that they are normally based on historical voting patterns. The problem is that we have never seen four parties, and it is not easy to foretell where the pockets of support will develop. With no concentration, the NDP could end up with 4 seats and second everywhere else. With high concentration I have no idea how many they would get, and nither do any of the modellers.

The NDP has the potential to draw in traditional Lib anglophone and immigrant vote in Montreal. Toss in the soft nationalists deserting the Bloc and they could shatter Liberal AND Bloc fortresses alike in Montreal.
