  • One of the three reactors that was shut down now appears to be on fire as well? WTF?

Ogie: It sounded like there have been reports that the third explosion did damage the reactor vessel, and also possibly that the seawater they were pumping in to cool it was leaking out. Where would the water that leaks out be going, just pooling on the floor of the containment building?

      • I'm starting to think all those anti-nuke folks knew what they were talking about. Now, I know all you Star Trek educated people will disagree with my thinking, but got to face the facts. All you need is just one nuke accident to ruin the whole idea of nuke power. I have always been for nuke power. I just don't think it justifies being used when human lives are at stake and the potential for irreversible, catastrophic, failure is possible. Not worth it!

        IMHO.

            • I don't think we have much choice at the moment despite the risks. Perhaps one day we will develop a clean safe means of generating sufficient energy. Right now we have to use the coal, oil and uranium to generate sufficient power.

I admire you for posting still, after showing that you knew nothing about what you pretended to know. I would be embarrassed if a hillbilly made me look stupid.

                    • Accordingnto ANS looks like the suppression pool has been damaged. The function of the suppression pool in a BWR design is to take steam releases from the reactor (the ones they have been doing purposefully to reduce the reactor over pressurization) and blow them into a large standing pool of water to reduce temps and pressure. Also they are likewise indicating unit 2 may have a compromised RPV. If that is the case then coolant and molten fuel can be escaping the confines of the RPV. Primary containment still exists (the many feet of steel reinforced concrete designed to be the core catcher as it were). Needless to say though this is not a good development.

Doc at this point no lives have been lost likewise even in a worst case situation the core were to melt beyond containments ability to deal with it, the situation means an environmental nightmare for a local area. While tragic the people have been evacuated the response has been admirable and the overall condemnation of the industry unwarranted. Did the chemical industry get shutdown after Bhopal?
